China is the dominant force; that fact was underlined indelibly on the first three days of proceedings at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanma.

On the fourth day of action, as play in the initial stage of the Junior Boys’ Singles and Junior Girls’ Singles events progressed, the fact that Japan is increasingly the major rival was endorsed.

Notably in the Junior Girls’ Singles competition, Miku Izumo, Moe Nomura and Yumeno Soma all remained unbeaten; all caused upsets to secure top spots in their respective groups on a day when only first position reserved a main draw place.

Miku Izumo caused arguably the biggest upset, she beat China’s Zhang Binyue, the no.7 seed, unbeaten throughout the preceding Junior Girls’ Team event and the winner on this year’s ITTF World Junior Circuit in both Oman and France. Impressively, Miku Izumo won in four games (11-3, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8).

Outstanding from Miku Izumo, it was the same from Moe Nomura who overcame Chinese Taipei’s Wen Rui-Ling, the no.11 seed (11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 12-10), as it was from Yumeno Soma. She ended the hopes of India’s Prapti Sen, the no.15 seed (11-3, 11-4, 11-9).

Success for Miku Izumo, Moe Nomura and Yumeno Soma means that Japan’s fields the maximum four players in the main draw. In addition, Miyuu Kihara, as expected, the no.16 seed, secured first place in her group.

Meanwhile in the Junior Boys’ Singles event, Yukiya Uda and Koyo Kanamitsu emulated their female counterparts, remaining unbeaten and causing upsets. Yukiya Uda beat Singapore’s Pang Yew En Koen, the no.9 seed (11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5); Koyo Kanamitsu accounted for India’s Snehit Suravajjula, the no.10 seed (11-2, 11-7, 11-7). They join colleague Yuta Tanaka in the main draw, the no.14 seed, he duly topped his group.

Worthy performances and there were two more to catch the eye. In the Junior Boys’ Singles event, Hong Kong’s Pak Yik Man secured first place in his group, notably beating Chinese Taipei’s Li Hsin-Yang, the no.5 seed (8-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-6). In the counterpart Junior Girls’ Singles competition, Malaysia’s Karen Lyne followed suit. She topped her group courtesy of success against Hong Kong’s Chau Wing Sze, the no.4 seed (11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6).

Surprises; however, for the remaining leading names it was top spot in the group. In the Junior Boys’ Singles event China’s Xu Yingbin, Yu Heyi and Xiang Peng secured first places without defeat as did India’s Manav Vikash Thakkar and Manush Utpalbahai Shah. Not be overshadowed, it was first place for Chinese Taipei’s Feng Yi-Hsin and Iran’s Amin Ahmadian.

Likewise in the Junior Girls’ Singles competition it was top spot without alarm for China’s Shi Xunyao and Qian Tianyi, a situation that applied to Chinese Taipei’s Su Pei-Ling and Chen Ting-Ting as well as to India’s Archana Girish Kamath.

Play in the main draw of both the Junior Boys’ Singles and Junior Girls’ Singles evets commences on Friday 17th August.
