The runner up one year ago when beaten in the final by compatriot, Sun Yingsha, the player destined to represent China at the forthcoming Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games; Qian Tianyi climbed on step higher at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

On the afternoon of Saturday 18th August, she won the Junior Girls’ Singles title beating colleague Shi Xunyao in the final (11-8, 11-6, 13-11, 7-11, 11-3); thus to some extent extracting an air of revenge.

Earlier this year on the ITTF World Junior Circuit, they had met in the final in both Poland and in Hong Kong; on both occasions, Shi Xunyao had won, the effect being that she replaced Qian Tianyi at the top of the Under 18 Girls’ World Rankings. Thus when they competed in Nay Pyi Taw, Shi Xunyao was the top seed; Qian Tianyi was next in the order of preference.

At the semi-final stage of proceedings, Qian Tianyi had beaten Japan’s Miyuu Kihara (11-2, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5); Shi Xunyao had ousted Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yee.

One step higher in the Junior Girls’ Singles competition; for Qian Tianyi and Shi Xunyao in the Junior Girls’ Doubles event, it was two steps lower. The winners the previous year in Asan, the top seeds, they suffered a shock semi-final defeat at the hands of the Korea Republic’s Shin Yubin and Ryu Hanna (11-8, 11-8, 11-9).

An outstanding performance from Shin Yubin and Ryu Hanna; that form was maintained on the concluding day of play. They secured the top step of the podium overcoming Japan’s Yumeno Soma and Haruna Ojio by the very narrowest of margins in a full distance five games final (5-11, 11-7, 13, 11-13, 11-9). Thus they became the only gold medallists in the whole tournament not from China.

Two titles for Qian Tianyi, having on the third day of action won Junior Girls’ Team gold in harness with Shi Xunyao and Zhang Binyue, on the concluding day there was a third and a second silver of the day for Shi Xunyao. Qian Tianyi partnered Yu Heyi to Junior Mixed Doubles success; in the title deciding contest, the duo overcame Xu Yingbin and Shi Xunyao (8-11, 11-3, 12-10, 11-5).

Success for one prominent name on this year’s ITTF World Junior Circuit and in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event there was success for another; in an all Chinese final Kuai Man beat Chen Yi (11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 11-5) to claim the top prize.
