The winner in Poland, the runner up in Thailand, a semi-finalist in both France and Italy; always a place on the podium when competing this year in Junior Boys’ Singles events on the ITTF World Junior Circuit.

On Saturday 18th August, at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, Xiang Peng secured another podium finish, as in Poland, it was the top step; he won the Junior Boys’ Singles title.

In an event where China provided all four semi-finalists, Xiang Peng, born in July 2003 and eligible to compete in Cadet age group events, secured the title in dramatic fashion.

Tense moments, in the penultimate round he beat Yu Heyi, the player who currently heads the ITTF World Junior Circuit Standings, in seven games (11-7, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 3-11, 7-11, 11-5), before securing victory in a similar manner by overcoming Niu Guankai (11-6, 9-11, 4-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8). Earlier, at the semi-final stage, Niu Guankai had beaten Xu Yingbin (11-7, 11-13, 11-4, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9).

A semi-final defeat for Yu Heyi but he did depart Nay Pyi Taw with three gold medals. In addition to the Junior Boys’ Team gold secured earlier in the week, alongside his last day semi-final colleagues, he partnered Qian Tianyi to Junior Mixed Doubles success, the pair beating colleagues Xu Yingbin and Shi Xunyao in the final (8-11, 11-3, 12-10). Later, he secured Junior Boys’ Doubles gold in harness with Xu Yingbin. In the title deciding contest the pair accounted for Korea Republic’s Choi Inhyeok and Kwak Yubin by the very narrowest of decisions (8-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 12-10).

Gold for China, it was the same in the Cadet Boys’ Singles event; Zeng Beixun, who alongside Xiang Peng and Zhu Jiaqi, had won the Cadet Boys’ Team title at the recent 2018 Hang Seng 2018 Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open secured the title at the final expense of colleague Kuang Li (9-11, 11-6, 11-1, 11-1, 11-8).

Most certainly it was a performance of note; some three months ago on the ITTF World Junior Circuit in Thailand, Kuang Li had won the Junior Boys’ Singles title; the player he beat in the final, a certain Xiang Peng!
