Present at the ITTF World Cadet Challenge last year in the Japanese city of Tottori, Panama’s Jacobo Vahnish won the junior boys’ singles title at the 2019 Central American Junior and Cadet Championships in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday 9th February.

The top seed, he beat surprise finalist, the host nation’s Sebastian Cano, in a closely contested seven games duel to arrest the title (11-7, 11-2, 8-11, 10-12, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6).

Success against a Mexican adversary in the final, it was the same at the quarter and semi-final stages; furthermore, there was an air of revenge.

In the round of the last eight he beat Dario Arce (6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 14-12, 11-4), the player against whom on the opening day of proceedings he had experienced defeat (11-7, 12-10, 11-9) in the initial phase of the junior boys’ team event. A potential testing hurdle overcome, Jacobo Vahnish kept his nerve and focus to secure his place in the final at the expense of Diego Vazquez, the no.4 seed (12-10, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 17-19, 11-9).

Gold for Jacobo Vahnish as expected, for Sebastian Cano, a player like Dario Arce with no current world ranking his silver medal was not anticipated.

Impressively, the 16 year old, after beating Guatemala’s Jorge Chacun, the no.10 seed (11-1, 11-2, 11-7, 11-5), accounted for El Salvador’s Diego Orantes, the no.3 seed (2-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9), before ending the progress of Kevin Ruano, very much a young man in form. Like Jorge Chacun, from Guatemala and the no.6 seed, in the round of the last eight he had beaten Costa Rica’s Daniel Araya, the no.2 seed, in six games (5-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-2). However, when facing Sebastian Cano it was a different story; the Mexican prevailed in six games (9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-4).

A series of impressive performances from Jacobo Vahnish; from Mexico’s Rogelio Castro, the top seed in the cadet boys’ singles competition it was a series of command performances. On the concluding day of play, he surrendered just one individual game; that being in the quarter-final round when facing colleague Angel Villasenor (11-8, 6-11, 11-2, 11-5). A potentially difficult hurdle overcome, he beat Guatemala’s Diego de la Cruz, the no.3 seed (11-3, 11-6, 11-6) and compatriot Leonardo Perez, the no.8 seed (11-5, 11-2, 12-10) to secure the title.

Most creditable performances from Rogelio Castro, in the opposite half of the draw it was the same from Leonardo Perez.

Following success against Guatemala’s Ricardo Gatica (5-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-3, 11-7) and Luis Ton, the no.4 seed (11-5, 12-10, 8-11, 11-4), he ousted colleague Jorge Buenrostro, the no.12 seed (12-10, 11-8, 11-7) to reach the final. Notably one round earlier, Jorge Buenrostro had caused an upset of note by overcoming El Salvador’s Edgardo Sanchez, the no.2 seed (13-11, 15-13, 11-7).
