Places in the main draw at stake, in the first stage of both the cadet boys’ singles and cadet girls’ singles events at the 2019 Central American Junior and Cadet Championships in Cancun, Mexico, there were surprise names who ended the day in group first positions.

For the boys, Costa Rica’s Johnny Vasquez and Guatemala’s Oscar Herrarte, alongside Leonardo Perez were the players to raise the eyebrows; for the girls it was Tamara Martin, Luna Cortes and Jimena Pena, like Leonardo Perez from the host nation.

Johnny Vasquez remained unbeaten to finish ahead of Panama’s Raul Yee and Mexico’s Raul Tapia with El Salvador’s René Escobar, the no.5 seed having to settle for fourth place and thus elimination. In each of the cadet boys’ singles and cadet girls’ singles events, players finishing in first and second positions advanced to the main draw.

A surprise first place for Johnny Vasquez, the tenth highest rated player on duty, it was the same for Leonardo Perez, the eighth highest. He concluded matters with Panama’s David Herrera in runners up spot and Devesh Hukmani of Belize having to settle for third position.

First places for Johnny Vasquez and Leonardo Perez were surprises, the top spot gained by Oscar Herrarte was an even bigger surprise; no current world ranking, he finished his group ahead of Taye Parkinson from Belize, Costa Rica’s Benjamin Paniagua and Mexico’s Ricardo Fernandez.

Similarly, all players with no current world ranking, Tamara Martin, Luna Cortes and Jimena Pena upset the pecking order. Tamara Martin concluded her group ahead of Costa Rica’s Paula Gomes, the no.3 seed, Luna Cortes reserved top spot with El Salvador’s Victoria Guevara, the no.2 seed, the next in line.

Meanwhile, Jimena Pena reserved pole position ahead of Guatemala’s Kimberly Garcia, also a player with no current world status; Costa Rica’s Maripaz Araya, the no.6 seed, had to settle for third place.

Surprise first places, in the remaining groups the seeds justified their status.

In the cadet boys’ singles event Mexico’s Rogelio Castro and El Salvador’s Edgardo Sanchez duly remained unbeaten to top their groups, as did Guatemala’s Diego de la Cruz and Luis Ton. Likewise in the cadet girls’ singles competition, there were top spots as anticipated for Mexico’s Aurora Andrade, El Salvador’s Cristina Machado and Guatemala’s Jenny Cux.
