Present in Puerto Rico at the recent Universal 2019 Pan America Cup; on Thursday 7th February, at the 2019 Central American Junior and Cadet Championships in the Mexican city of Cancun, Lucero Cordero was once again very much in evidence.

She partnered Hidalynn Zapata to junior girls’ doubles success, as Guatemala claimed two titles on the second day of action. In addition, Diego de la Cruz and Luis Ton emerged the cadet boys’ doubles champions.

Both were successes as status predicted; both pairs commenced play as the top seeds.

Imposingly, Lucia Cordero and Hidalynn Zapata ended Mexican gold medal hopes; at the semi-final stage they ousted Lucia Fernandez and Monica Muñoz, the no.3 seeds (11-5, 11-5, 11-6), before in the title deciding contest overcoming surprise finalists Marbella Aceves and Clio Barcenas, (11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7).

The no.6 seeds, Marbella Aceves and Clio Barcenas had booked their place in the final courtesy of a success against Guatemala’s Mariana Lopez and Mercedes Mendizabal, the no.4 seeds (11-2, 11-4, 11-6), followed by a penultimate round win in opposition to El Salvador’s Keren Constanza and Monica Mendoza, the no.2 seeds (11-5, 11-6, 11-6).

Comprehensive wins for Lucia Cordero and Hidalynn Zapata; for Diego de la Cruz and Luis Ton life was more exacting.

At the final hurdle of the cadet boys’ doubles event, they needed the full five games to beat Mexico’s Jorge Buenrostro and Rogelio Castro, the no.2 seeds (11-7, 11-6, 11-5); the Mexicans having booked their place in the final courtesy of success against unexpected semi-finalists, Guatemala’s Ricardo Gatica and Oscar Herrarte (11-7, 11-6, 11-5). The no.8 seeds, earlier at the quarter-final stage they had beaten El Salvador’s René Escobar and Edgardo Sanchez, the no.3 seeds (11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7).

Bronze for El Salvador, most creditably there was also bronze for Belize; at the semi-final stage Devesh Hukmani and Taye Parkinson, the no.4 seeds had experienced defeat at the hands of Diego de la Cruz and Luis Ton (12-10, 11-7, 11-3).

Play concludes in Cancun on Saturday 9th February.
