Competing in Class 10, the host nation’s José Ruiz and Jorge Cardona both kept their medal hopes alive on Thursday 16th November, as play in the Men’s Singles standing categories progressed at the 2018 Spanish Para Open in Almeria.

Both finished the day in first places in their respective groups as did their major rivals Indonesia’s David Jacobs, Frenchman Mateo Boheas and Austria’s Krisztian Gardos.

Outcomes as anticipated but there were surprises amongst the leading names, all standing events being organized in two stages; players finishing the group phase in first and second positions advancing to the main draw.

In Class 7, Chile’s Matias Pino duly remained unbeaten as did the host nation’s Alberto Seoane and Switzerland’s Valentin Kneuss; however, for Great Britain’s Martin Perry, the no.4 seed, there was defeat. He was beaten by Germany’s Tim Laue (11-2, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9) and had to settle for runners up spot. Tim Laue duly remained unbeaten to top the group.

Defeat for Great Britain contrary to expectations, in Class 7, it was the reverse scenario, Alexander Bland accounted for Russia’s Vladimir Anikanov, the no.2 seed (11-8, 11-3, 11-4) to secure first place ahead of Vladimir Anikanov; an event that witnessed no shortage of upsets.

Belgium’s Ben Despineux, the top seeds, duly finished his group in first place but Japan’s Kazuya Kaneko, the no.3 seed, had to settle for third spot behind Dustin Eier of the Netherlands and Poland’s Maksym Chudzicki. Similarly, Switzerland’s Thomas Rosenast, the no.4 seed, experienced defeat at the hands of Colombia’s José Vargas (11-7, 11-8, 11-9) and had to settle for runners up position. José Vargas remained unbeaten to top the group.

Meanwhile, in Class 8, the top names, Ukraine’s Viktor Didukh, Ivan Mai amd Maksym Nikolenko, alongside Frenchman Thomas Bouvais, all remained unbeaten and ended the day with quarter-final places reserved.

Likewise, the leading names in Class 9, Hungary’s Deszo Berecki, Ukraine’s Lev Kats and Great Britain’s Josh Stacey secured first positions in their groups as anticipated.

However, in Class 11, there was a surprise, Poland’s Marek Chybinski, the no.3 seed, was beaten by Japan’s Toshiya Takahsashi (14-12, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4) and had to settle for runners up spot. Toshiya Takahsashi remained unbeaten to secure top spot.

Play in the individual events concludes on Friday 16th November.
