Chen Yi, the top seed, experienced few problems in the later stages of proceedings; she recorded a quarter-final success against Japan’s Haruna Ojio in straight games (11-9, 11-7, 11-9), prior to reserving her place in the final by overcoming Korea Republic’s Byun Seoyoung in five games (8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7).

Impressive from Chen Yi, it was the same from Kuai Man, the no.6 seed; only the semi-final duel being somewhat more exacting. In the round of the last eight, she recorded a straight games win in opposition to Thailand’s Wanwisa Aueawiriyayothin (11-5, 11-7, 11-3), prior to requiring six games to end the progress of compatriot, Li Yuqi, the no.4 seed (5-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8).

No great moments of drama; for Zeng Beixun in the Cadet Boys’ Singles event, the no.6 seed, life was somewhat more treacherous. After posting a four games quarter-final win in opposition to Chinese Taipei’s Li Hsin-Yu, the no.2 seed (8-11, 11-4, 14-12, 11-7), he needed the full seven games to beat colleague Xiong Memgyang (11-6, 4-11, 11-3, 5-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-6), a player who throughout the Cadet Boys’ Team event had been resigned to the bench. Not a bad reserve!

Similarly, at the semi-final stage Kuang Li, the top seed who keeps the pen-hold grip tradition alive, needed six games to beat the Korea Republic’s Hwang Jinha (12-10, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6). One round earlier, rather more comfortably, Kuang Li had prevailed against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Guan-Ru (11-2, 11-2, 14-12).
