Together at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, they combined to win the Junior Boys’ Team title earlier in the week; now apart, they contest the medals in the Junior Boys’ Singles competition.

The Chinese quartet comprising Niu Guankai, Xiang Peng, Xu Yingbin and Yu Heyi duly booked semi-final places following success on Friday 17th August.

However, it was hard fought success with arguably Niu Guankai being the pick of the bunch.

Notably not selected for the final of the Junior Boys’ Team event against India, he underlined the fact that he may have been a wise selection. The no.16 seed, after beating Hong Kong’s Pau Yik Man (11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8), he accounted for Manav Vikash Thakkar, the top seed (11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-3), the player had been crucial in guiding India to the final.

A close seven games quarter-final encounter for Niu Guankai, it was the same for Xu Yingbin, the no.3 seed; following a straight games opening round win against Chinese Taipei’s Pen Chih, Xu Yingbin was thoroughly tested by Japan’s Yukiya Uda. He emerged successful by the minimal two point margin in the deciding game (5-11, 8-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 13-11). Notably Yukiya Uda was a player in form; in the opening round he had accounted for Iran’s Amin Ahmadian, the no.6 seed (11-3, 11-9, 11-7, 11-2).

Hard fought contests, it was very similar for Yu Heyi, the no.4 seed and for Xiang Peng, the no.7 seed.

At the quarter-final stage Yu Heyi needed six games to beat India’s Manush Utpalbhai Shah, the no.8 seed (9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4) having in the opening round recorded a straight games success in opposition to Iran’s Abbasi Amirreza (11-7, 11-5, 11-5, 11-4).

Likewise, Xiang Peng, the no.7 seed, after ending the hopes of Japan’s Koyo Kanamitsu in straight games (11-7, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10), required six games to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Feng Yi-Hsin, the no.2 seed (6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 16-14, 11-6).

In the penultimate round Niu Guankai meets Xu Yingbin, Yu Heyi opposes Xiang Peng; play concludes in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday 18th August.
