A step ahead of the field, China won both the Junior Boys’ Team and Junior Girls’ Team titles at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar on Wednesday 15th August.

Three matches to nil verdicts were the outcomes in both finals with India and Japan being the respective runners up.

Convincing wins but arguably the Junior Girls’ Team final was closer than at first sight the victory margin may suggest; only one of the three matches did not go the full five games distance and that was resolved in four.

Shi Xunyao gave China the early advantage by beating Yumeno Soma (7-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-2, 11-5), before in a similarly hard fought encounter, Qian Tianyi overcame Miyuu Kihara to double the advantage (12-14, 11-4, 11-3, 11-13, 11-6). Hard fought wins for Shi Xunyao and Qian Tianyi; it was no different for Zhang Binyue, she was tested by Moe Nomura (11-8, 14-12, 9-11, 11-6).

Exacting times for the young ladies from the People’s Republic of China; for Xiang Peng, Yu Heyi and Xu Yingbin, in the Junior Boys’ Team final against India’s Jeet Chandra, Snehit Suravajjula and Manav Vikash Thakkar, life was less fraught.

Xu Yingbin gave China the perfect start by beating Jeet Chandra (10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5), before Xiang Peng accounted for Manav Vikash Thakkar (11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8) and Yu Heyi overcame Snehit Suravajjula to end matters (11-7, 11-3, 11-7).

Runners up spot for India, in the Junior Girls’ Team event, it was fourth place. The trio comprising Archana Girish Kamath, Prapti Sen and Yashini Sivasankar experienced a three-nil defeat in the play-off contest when facing Chinese Taipei’s Chen Ting-Ting, Su Pei-Ling and Chien Tung-Chuan.

Third place for Chinese Taipei, in the Junior Boys’ Team event it was third position for the Korea Republic but it was a hard earned third place; the trio formed by Cho Daeseong, Choi Inhyeok and Kwak Yubin having to complete a recovery of note when facing Singapore’s Dominic Koh Song Jun, Pang Yew En Koen and Gerald Yu Zong Jun

Cho Daeseong lost to Gerald Yu Zong Jun (9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7), before Choi Inhyeok suffered the same fate when facing Pang Yew En Koen (9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-6). It was at that stage the Korean recovery began. Kwak Yubin beat Dominic Koh Song Jun (15-13, 11-4, 11-6), before Cho Daeseong overcame Pang Yew En Koen (14-12, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6) and Choi Inhyeok defeated Gerald Yu Zong Jun (11-7, 12-10, 11-4) to complete the fightback.

Team events over, the individual events now follow; play concludes on Saturday 18th August.
