Delight and disappointment but at the end of the opening day of play, Monday 13th August, at the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, the aspirations of India were very much alive.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for a country that is undoubtedly making positive strides, the joy emanated in the Junior Girls’ Team event, the frustration in the counterpart Junior Boys´ Team competition.

Selecting from Archana Girish Kamath, Yashini Sivasankar, Prapti Sen and Selena Selvakumar, the Indian outfit secured first place in their initial stage group in the Junior Girls’ Team event and thus a place in the quarter-finals. The notable result was the success against Chinese Taipei, the highest rated team in the group, who selected from Chen Ting-Ting, Chien Tung-Chuan, Wen Rue-Ling and Su Pei-Ling.

Defeat for Chinese Taipei but it was to be their only reverse of the day; thus second place in the group and progress to the main draw was secured.

Somewhat conversely, in the initial phase of the Junior Boys’ Team event, with Manav Vikash Thakkar, Jeet Chandra, Manush Utpalbhai Shah and Snehit Suravajjula available for selection, a surprise defeat was experienced.

The top listed team in their group, they experienced a three-two defeat at the hands of Singapore, who chose from Pang Yew En Koen, Josh Chua Shao Han, Gerald Yu Zong Jun and Dominic Koh Song Jun.

A reverse but not terminal, it was their only defeat of the day in an event where in each of the three groups, one fixture for each team remains. Currently, in addition to Singapore; Chinese Taipei, who select from Li Hsin-Yang, Peng Chih, Feng Yi-Hsin and Chen Jun-Ting, alongside Japan’s Yukiya Uda, Shunsuke Togami, Yuta Tanaka and Koyo Kanamitsu, remain unbeaten.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Girls’ Team event, where the group phase has been completed, Korea Republic and Hong Kong in addition to India secured first places. Korea Republic selected from Shin Yubin, Ryu Hanna, Wee Yeji and Lee Daeun; for Hong Kong it was Chau Wing Sze, Wong Chin Yau, Karisa Lee Ka Yee and Lo Tsz Kwan.

The top seeded outfits in each of the Junior Boys’ Team and Junior Girls’ Team events were not required to compete in the initial phase; they receive direct entries to the quarter-finals.

China occupies the top seeded position in both events, in the Junior Boys’ Team event, Korea Republic reserves the second seeded spot, in the Junior Girls’ Team event it is Japan. In the former China selects from Niu Guankai, Xu Yingbin, Yu Heyi and Xiang Peng; for the girls it is Qian Tianyi, Shi Xunyao, Guo Yuhan and Zhang Binyue.

Notably for the Korea Republic boys, Cho Daeseong, impressive on this year’s ITTF Challenge Series tournaments, is at the helm. He is supported by Choi Inhyeok, Kwak Yubin and Kim Byunghyeon; for the Japanese girls, the line-up reads Miyuu Kihara, Yumeno Soma, Miku Izumo and Moe Nomura.

The quarter and semi-finals of both the Junior Boys’ Team and Junior Girls’ Team events will be played on Tuesday 14th August.
