Impressive on the opening two days of action when they had played major roles in guiding Mexico to gold in the Girls’ Team competition, Aurora Andrade and Arantxa Cossio Aceves, alongside Colombia’s Juliana Rodriguez emerged the players to cause the surprises in the initial stage of the Girls’ Singles event at the 2018 Latin American Cadet Championships in San José, Costa Rica on Thursday 9th August.

All remained unbeaten to secure passports to the main draw; moreover all beat the highest rated players in their respective groups.

Aurora Andrade accounted for El Salvador’s Cristina Machado, the no.4 seed (17-15, 12-14, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8), prior to overcoming Costa Rica’s Klara Nuñez (11-7, 11-3, 11-3).

Likewise, Arantxa Cossio Aceves beat Puerto Rico’s Brianna Burgos, the no.7 seed (7-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9) before, in a similar vein to Aurora Andrade securing first place in the group courtesy of success in opposition to a host nation adversary; she overcame Maria Monge (11-5, 11-4, 11-6).

Hard fought wins against prominent opposition; it was the same for Juliana Rodriguez. After beating Puerto Rico’s Sonelis Gonzalez Cartagena (11-13, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3), she accounted for Chile’s Macarena Montecino, the no.11 seed (12-10, 6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9), before duly completing her first phase contests with victory over Peru’s Rosalyn Leon (11-5, 11-8, 13-11).

Defeats for seeded players but for each of Cristina Machado, Brianna Burgos and Juliana Rodriguez it was their only defeat; thus second place in the group was reserved and a passport to the main draw.

Surprise outcomes but not where the top names were concerned; however, for Mexico’s Marbella Aceves, the top seed and Chile’s Mariam Ruiz, the no.2 seed, there were close calls. Marbella Aveves needed the full five games to beat Colombia’s Juliana Lozada (11-6, 11-6, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7); similarly Mariam Ruiz was extended the full distance by Guatemala’s Mariana Lopez (12-14, 11-2, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8).

Play in the main draw commences on Saturday 11th August.
