Impressive, Peru ‘A’ represented by Carlos Fernandez and Nicolas Luna, underlined their status as one of the favourites for gold in the Under 13 Boys’ Team event at the 2017 Latin American Under 11 and Under 13 Championships, which commenced in Asuncion, Paraguay on Monday 25th September.

First place in the group was secured; the duo finishing ahead of Ecuador’s Jeremy Cedeno and Diego Piguave who. alongside the Peruvians advanced to the main draw. In each event, teams finishing in first and second positions progress to the knock-out phase.

Similarly, in the Under 13 Boys’ Team event, it was first place for the Paraguay ‘A’ Team duo of Elias Apud and Gaston di Mena, as it was for Brazil’s Gustavo Gertsmann and Shim Joon. Four groups in the initial stage; Mexico was not to be left out. The partnership of Rogelio Castro and Leonardo Perez duly claimed top billing.

Unfortunately, the Puerto Rican pairing of Angel Naranjo and Derek Valentin, major contenders for honours were not able to travel to Asuncion. Following Hurricane Maria, the whole of Puerto Rico is without power, there is 7.00pm curfew and the international airport is heavily restricted having to operate using generators.

Peru to the fore in the Under 13 Boys’ Team event, it was the same in the Under 11 Boys’ Team competition; Julio Villar and Renzo Zeballos reserved first place in their group but the country to note was the Dominican Republic. Eduardo Darley and Ramon Vila, on duty for the Dominican Republic ‘A’, secured pole position in their group as did the Dominican Republic ‘B’ pairing of José Cabral and Rafael Cabrera.

First place gained; in addition Brazil’s Leonardo IIzuka and Guilherme Marchiori topped their group, a feat also achieved by Ecuador’s Esteban Alban and Henry Ibarra, as well as by Guatemala’s Ricardo Gatica and Andy Moscosco.

Meanwhile, in the Under 11 Girls’ Team and Under 13 Girls’ Team events, where one series of fixtures remains in each competition, two teams in each event are assured of first places.

Guatemala fielding the duo of Jenny Crux and Kimbely Garcia, alongside the Peru ‘A’ Team pairing of Alheli Llufire and Ana Paula Yenobi completed their first stage fixtures unbeaten in the Under 11 Girls’ Team event. Likewise, in the Under 13 Girls’ Team competition, Brazil with Beatriz Kanashiro and Giulia Takahashi in action, alongside the Mexico ‘A’ partnership of Pilar Alvarado and Aranyx Cossio completed their first phase engagements without a hiccup.

Play in the team events concludes on Wednesday 27th September.
