Carlos Fernandez and Giulia Takahashi winners in Asuncion

Impressive performances, Peru’s Carlos Fernandez and Brazil’s Giulia Takahashi emerged the names very much to note on the concluding of play, Saturday 30th September, at the 2017 Latin American Junior and Cadet Championships in the Paraguayan capital city of Asuncion.

Favourites for gold prior to the start of play, Carlos Fernandez won the Under 11 Boys’ Singles title; Giulia Takahashi secured the top prize in the counterpart Under 13 Girls’ Singles competition.

At the final hurdle, Carlos Fernandez overcame Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo (11-3, 11-7, 11-7), having at the quarter-final stage beaten Mexico’s Rogelio Castro (5-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5) and in the penultimate round, Brazil’s Shim Joon (11-9, 11-8, 12-10).

In the counterpart half of the draw, Angel Naranjo had overcome the host nation’s Elias Apud (16-14, 3-11, 11-9, 4-11, 13-11), prior to ending the hopes of Guatemala’s Diego de la Cruz (11-4, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10) to reserve his place in the title deciding contest.

Meanwhile, in a similar vein, Giulia Takahashi imposed her will on proceedings. In the round of the last eight, she beat Peru’s Luciana Cisneros (7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7), before defeating Alejandra Prieto, also from Peru (11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3) and Mexico’s Arantxa Cossio (11-9, 11-8, 14-12) to reserve the top step of the podium.

Defeat in the final but en route, Arantxa Cossio had proved her worth; like Giulia Takahashi she had beaten Peruvian adversaries. At the quarter-final stage she had accounted for Ana Aragon (11-8, 11-3, 11-6), before in the semi-finals overcoming Maria Maldonado (8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 13-11).

Runners up spot for Arantxa Cossio but partnering Paula Pena, the duo emerged successful in the Under 13 Girls’ Doubles event causing Peru more anguish. In the final they recorded a straight games win in opposition to Ana Aragon and Maria Maldonado (11-8, 11-7, 13-11).

Disappointment for Peru in the Under 13 Girls’ Doubles final; it was the same in the Under 13 Boys’ Doubles title deciding contest. In a full distance five games contest decided by the minimal two point margin, Carlos Fernandez and Nicolas Luna experience defeat at the hands of Angel Naranjo and Puerto Rican colleague, Derek Valentin (6-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9).
