World Ranking points from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are set to expire on Tuesday 4 April, triggering significant changes in the ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking.

It’s not just the Olympics; other events including the 2021 WTT Star Contender Doha II, 2021 WTT Contenders Budapest, Tunis, Lasko, and Novo Mesto, as well as the 2021 African, Asian, and Pan-American Championships, 2021 Europe Top-16 Cup, 2021 European U21 Championships, and 2021 Czech, Kazakhstan, and Ecuador International Opens are also due to expire.

A player’s ITTF Table Tennis Ranking is calculated based on the total points earned from their best eight results achieved in the last 12 months. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, special measures were introduced to mitigate its impact, such as extending the validity of points awarded at 2021 and 2022 senior events.

As the calendar for 2023 is filled with exciting events, a plan for expiring ranking points was formulated and these legacy points are expiring in batches between January and July 2023. This decision was approved by the ITTF Executive Committee back in December 2022.
