Day two of the prestigious "Tokyo 2020 Preparation for China Table Tennis Team - Olympic Simulation Games" event saw the race for mixed doubles glory heat up in Lingshui City, Hainan Province as the number of pairs competing for the honour was reduced to the final two on Sunday 9th August.

The eagerly anticipated mixed doubles competition continued to deliver unmissable action with the partnerships of Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu, as well as that of Xu Xin and Sun Yingsha successfully booking their spots in the final.

A dramatic close to the day, semi-final contests dominated the story of the evening; one fixture of interest saw Xu Xin and Sun Yingsha pitted against Lin Gaoyuan and Sun Mingyang.

In the first game, the two sides entered close combat with very little to separate them. Locked in stalemate, Xu Xin and Sun Yingsha seized the opportunity, taking the lead with a 12-10 win. Lin Gaoyuan and Sun Mingyang launched an immediate response, fighting back to tie the game scores. However, momentum shifted back in the favour of their opponents as Xu and Sun registered back-to-back game wins to gain a comprehensive 3-1 lead.

Down but not out just yet, Lin and Sun refused to bow out without a fight and managed to form a mini-comeback: trailing 10-8, Xu and Sun levelled the scores at 10-10, the two sides continued to trade blows with Lin and Sun squeezing through 14-12. The sixth game was almost a replica of the fifth as Xu and Sun saved two game points at 10-8 but again fell short, leading the tie into a deciding game. Disappointed with the two previous games but this time Xu and Sun made it count, securing a narrow seven-game victory (12-10, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 12-14, 13-15, 11-6) to advance.

The other penultimate round affair saw Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng go head-to-head with Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu.

In the first game, the younger combination of Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu established an early lead and it wasn’t long before they found themselves one game ahead. Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng gradually adapted and began to exert their strength, winning two games in a row to move ahead in the tie for the first time.

The competition between the two sides continued to intensify with world class table tennis on display from all four athletes. Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu regained the upper hand, reversing the deficit with three game wins on the bounce to defeat Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng 4-2 (11-4, 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8).
