Aspiring young players and they are present in numbers. Overall 69 boys and 58 girls are present; in the under 11 age group, 33 boys and 28 girls are in duty, in the under 13 category the numbers read 36 boys and 30 girls.
Encouraging figures; in addition to Ecuador, players, coaches and officials have travelled from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela to be present in what is a very colonial city.
Two players per team, a fixture should it extend the full distance being five matches, four singles with doubles following the second singles. Each event comprises two stages, a group phase followed by knock-out; teams finishing in first and second positions in each group advancing to the main draw.
Overall a total of 14 outfits, drawn into four groups comprise the under 11 girls’ team competition, in under 11 boys’ event it is 16 teams, four groups. A full itinerary for the young players, it is exactly the same in the under 13 age group. In the girls’ team event, proceedings start with 16 teams drawn in four groups, for the boys’ team competition 17 teams commenced matters in five groups.
Intense competition and there has been a good start for the hosts, especially for the girls. In the under 11 age group, Anie Rubio and Maybelline Menendez topped their group as did Allison Palacios and Nohelia Ortiz. Similarly, in the under 13 age category, Maria Borja and Angelica Arellano secured first position, as did colleagues Keimy Achundia and Fiorella Olaya.
Play in the team events concludes on Friday 24th May.
