First stage of the men’s singles event concluded on Wednesday 3rd April at the 2019 Central American Championships in Guatemala City, surprise names secured first places; in the counterpart women’s singles competition, such upsets were less prevalent.

El Salvador’s Diego Orantes and José You from Honduras were very much the most unexpected names to head their lists; similarly the host nation’s Josué Archila Soto and Heber Moscoso topped their groups contrary to expectations but their first positions were less surprising.

Both Diego Orantes and José You started the day as the third rated players in their respective groups; José You remained unbeaten notably accounting for the host nation’s Hector Gatica, the no.4 seed (11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 13-11).

Disappointment for Hector Gatica but it was his only defeat, runners up spot was reserved; players finishing in first and second places in each group advanced to the main draw. Thus medal hopes remain alive.

Straightforward, for Diego Orantes, life was more complicated. In his opening match of the day he beat Guatemala’s Allan Gutierrez, the no.3 seed, in straight games (11-8, 11-8, 11-7). Allan Gutierrez duly recovered to overcome Costa Rica’s Daniel Araya, in five games (10-12, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7). A narrow defeat for Daniel Araya, he responded to secure a five games success in opposition to Diego Orantes (11-6, 12-10, 7-11, 7-11, 11-6).

Success against the highest rated player in the group; it was the same for Josué Archila Soto and Heber Moscoso as they gained first positions. Josué Archila Soto beat Panama’s Omer Avi-Tal, the no.7 seed (11-4, 6-11, 11-5, 11-3), Heber Moscoso overcame Honduran Alfredo Morazan, the no.8 seed (11-5, 7-11, 12-10, 11-7) to reserve top spot. Omer Avi-Tal duly finished in second place, for Alfredo Morazan it was the end of the road, he ended the day in fourth position.

Somewhat differently, in the initial stage of the women’s singles event, there was just one unexpected first place. Guatemala’s Mercedes Mendizabal finished ahead of Costa Rica’s Stefanny Rojas and El Salvador’s Monica Mendoza, the no.8 seed.

Otherwise for the leading names it was first place.

In the men’s singles event Mexico’s Marcos Madrid, Ricardo Villa and Miguel Lara duly topped their groups, as did Guatemala’s Kevin Montufar. Likewise, in the women’s singles competition it was first place for the host nation’s Mabelyn Enriquez, Andrea Montufar, Lucia Cordero and Hidalynn Zapata. Similarly, Mexico’s Yadira Silva, Monica Muñoz and Marbella Aceves reserved first positions.
