The aim is to compete in the greatest show on earth, the Olympic Games.

“My dream is to play at the Olympic Games and this is what is driving me forward in table tennis. The Olympic Games is the biggest stage every athlete dreams of in life and for me this is my target. Firstly I must be a professional and this is easier for me in Netherlands.” Remi Chambet-Weil

Notably for the young man, a pupil of the Vincent Van Gogh School, is making his second visit to Africa; last year he competed in Tunisia.

“I think Ghana has a quite friendly environment; everybody wants to greet you and exchange pleasantries with you, unlike in Europe where you only talk to people you know. Also the organization of the tournament is impressive in terms of transportation and other services. The tournament and hall might look small but I am personally impressed with the way things are panning out.” Remi Chambet-Weil

Comfortable in the environment, Remi Chambet-Weil has definite goals in Accra.

“I want to at least make it to the quarter-final of the junior boys’ singles event being my first time playing at junior level. In the cadet division, I am confident I can reach the semi-final and probably make it to the final. There is no doubt that I am improving with every competition and I hope to attend more competitions this year.” Remi Chambet-Weil

Making early strides, the teenager is well aware that family support is vital.

“My parents have been my pillar in the sport and their support has been enormous. I want to repay them by working hard. Also my coach has been supportive as well. Table tennis has taken me round the world and this is what I can get from other activities at my age. I have also met many new friends which I can never come across in life.” Remi Chambet-Weil

Basketball and volleyball are both sports which Remi Chambet-Weil has played but the decision is clear, top of the list is table tennis.
