Winners just under a year ago in late May when the tournament was staged in El Salvador, Mexico’s Ricardo Villa and Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero defend their respective men’s singles and women’s singles titles at the forthcoming 2019 Central American Championships.

Play commences in Guatemala City on Tuesday 2nd April and concludes on Saturday 6th April.

However, both face strong opposition if they are to succeed once again; Alan Gutierrez, the player Ricardo Villa beat in the men’s singles final in El Salvador, appears on the list as do the beaten semi-finalists, colleague Miguel Lara and Heber Moscoso, like Alan Guttierez, from Guatemala.

Strong contenders for honours but the strongest of all is Ricardo Villa’s compatriot, Marcos Madrid, the winner last year of the men’s singles event at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Baranquilla. He is the top seed ahead of Ricardo Villa and Allan Gutierrez; the host nation’s Hector Gatica, on duty at the Liebherr 2018 World Team Championships in Halmstad, completes the top four names.

Likewise, Marcos Madrid occupies the top seeded spot in the men’s doubles event in harness with Ricardo Villa; next in line being Alan Gutierrez and Guatemalan colleague Kevin Montufar. It is similar in the men’s team event; Marcos Madrid, Ricardo Villa, Miguel Lara and Carlos Zamora head the list, ensuing is Guatemala’s Hector Gatica, Kevin Montufar, Allan Guttierrez and Heber Moscoso.

Three top spots for Marcos Madrid, there is a fourth, partnering colleague Yadira Silva, the pair heads the mixed doubles list; the latter the major threat to the chances of Lucia Cordero retaining her women’s singles title. Yadira Silva, quarter-finalist earlier this year at the Universal ITTF Pan American Cup, is the no.2 seed behind the host nation’s Mabelyn Enriquez, the runner up last year in El Salvador.

Also in the women’s doubles competition, in harness with colleague Clio Barcenas, she occupies the second seeded spot behind Mabelyn Enriquez and Andrea Montufar, as she does in the women’s team competition. Guatemala, selecting from Mabelyn Enriquez, Lucia Cordero, Andrea Montufar amd Hidalynn Zapata, occupy the top spot; Mexico reserve second place with Yadira Silva and Clio Barcenas being supported by Monica Muñoz and Marbella Aceves.

Play commences with the men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles events; on the opening day, the mixed doubles being played to a conclusion.
