Highly successful in the initial group stage of play, first places secured contrary to expectations, the host nation’s Liu Yangzi alongside China’s Han Feier and Anna Hursey of Wales duly continued their good form later in the day on Tuesday 27th November at the 2018 Portugal Junior and Cadet Open.

All three advanced to reach the quarter-final stage of the Junior Girls’ Singles event; likewise, contrary to status, there was also progress for Qin Xiaoce, like Han Feier from China; earlier in the day, she had finished in second position in her group behind Liu Yangzi.

Both Liu Yangzi and Qin Xiaoce caused major upsets. Following success in opposition to Spain’s Ana Pedregosa (11-4, 11-3, 11-5, 11-1), Liu Yangzi beat India’s Prapti Sen, the no.3 seed (11-4, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3); similarly Qin Xiaoce accounted for the host nation’s Celia Silva, the no.4 seed, having in the opening round, ousted Sofia Ray of France (11-7, 11-4, 14-12, 11-5).

Notable wins, it was the same from Han Feier. She accounted for India’s Suhana Saini, the no.11 seed (11-3, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5) and then followed with success in opposition to Emine Ernst of the Netherlands, the no.30 seed (11-7, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7). Good form maintained; it was very much in the same mode from Anna Hursey, the no.29 seed; a direct entry to the second round, she ended the hopes of Sweden’s Hannah Holgersson, the no.23 seed (11-4, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3).

Surprises, in the remaining second round contests it was progress as predicted. India’s Selena Selvakumar, the top seed, accounted for Bernice Marteau of France, the no.14 seed (14-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6); colleague Swastika Ghosh, the no.2 seed, overcame China’s Xin Chenglin (11-13, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5).

Similarly, not to be overshadowed, Sweden’s Jennie Edvinsson, the no.8 seed, reserved her last eight place, courtesy of success in opposition to colleague Nomin Bassan, the no.21 seed (13-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5).

At the quarter-final stage, Selena Selvakumar meets Jennie Edvinsson, Anna Hursey confronts Liu Yanzi; in the opposite half of the draw Qin Xiaoce faces Han Feier, Alma Roose plays Swastika Ghosh.

The Junior Girls’ Singles event concludes on Wednesday 28th November.
