Keeping the crowd on the very edges of their seats in the Eriksdalshallen; no player did that better on Tuesday 30th October, in the qualification tournament that precedes the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Swedish Open in Stockholm than Frenchman, Enzo Angles.

In the second preliminary round of the Men’s Singles event, he performed an escape act of which the legendary Harry Houdini would have been proud; the only difference the efforts of the 23 year old were no illusion.

Listed at no.207 on the current Men’s World Rankings, he trailed Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia, named at no.34, by three games to nil and appeared in the fourth to be on his way out of proceedings.

Incredibly he recovered to record a seven games win (8-11, 10-12, 3-11, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10, 11-9) to gain the plaudits of the crowd.

“I know him quite well. I could have taken the second game but I didn’t. The third game was very hard, I wasn’t playing my game and I made so many mistakes. After somehow I won the fourth game 12-10, I started to believe that I could win. I changed the tactics a lot. I used my backhand much more and tried to change the placement of my services. It was a very tactical match. In the seventh game I started very well, strangely I had it in my head that after being three-nil down I had to win.” Enzo Angles

Success for Enzo Angles; also, as the second preliminary round of the Men’s Singles event progressed, there was more success for France.

Tristan Flore beat Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre (10-12, 11-6, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6), Alexandre Robinot accounted for Chinese Taipei’s Yang Heng-Wei (3-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4). Likewise, Can Akkuzu emerged successful when facing Ecuador’s Alberto Miño (3-11, 11-7, 11-7, 15-13, 11-7) and Emmanuel Lebesson ended the hopes of Brazil’s Vitor Ishiy (11-3, 11-7, 12-10, 11-9).

Conversely there were defeats for France; Eric Jouti, like Vitor Ishiy from Brazil, beat Antoine Hachard (11-9, 2-11, 11-7, 6-11, 15-13, 11-5), Italy’s Niagol Stoyanov accounted for Mehdi Bouloussa (5-11, 11-3, 11-5, 5-11, 12-10, 11-9). In a similar manner, Japan’s Kazuhiro Yoshimura halted the aspirations of Joe Seyfried (9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-3, 18-16, 11-8).

Play in the qualification concludes on Wednesday 31st October.
