Favourites to conclude proceedings with a place on the podium, the leading names in the Junior Boys’ Singles event at the 2018 Egypt Junior and Cadet Open in Sharm El Sheikh all emerged in the first places in their initial stage group contests on Friday 26th October.

Egypt’s Youssef Abdel-Aziz, Marwan Abdelwahab and Ahmed Elborhamy alongside India’s Raegan Alburquerque, the respective top four names, experienced few problems as they made their intentions crystal clear.

Likewise, Sweden’s Oskar Danielsson secured first place in his group without the loss of a single game.

However, for Abdelraham Dendan and Ammar Attia both from the host nation, life was more testing.
They ended the day unbeaten but Abdelraham Dendan, the no.5 seed, needed the full five games to beat colleague, Gawad Elherazy (12-10, 11-8, 5-11, 7-11, 11-4), as did Ammar Attia, the no.7 seed, when opposing both Sweden’s Jacob Dillstroem (8-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 14-12) and Romania’s Dragos Alexandru Bujor (11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4).

Close calls but success, for colleague Ziad Elshawa, the no.8 seed; it was a very different scenario. He was beaten by Sweden’s Alve Sjoevold (12-10, 11-6, 7-11, 11-3) and by China’s Han Yunqi (11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5). Third place in the group was to be his lot, Han Yunqi finished in first position with Alve Sjoevold in runners up spot.

Disappointment for Ziad Elshawa in the Junior Boys’ Singles event but in the counterpart Cadet Boys’ Singles competition; he finished in first place in his group on a day when Sweden enjoyed success. In addition to Alve Sjoeveld, colleagues Melker Ostblom, Linus Keraenen, Elias Sjogren and Isak Edwardsson all reserved main draw places.

Likewise amongst the leading groups, from foreign shores, China’s Li Chen, India’s Rajveer Shah and Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Alshareif all advanced to the main draw.

Meanwhile in the Mini Cadet Boys’ Singles event, the top two names both topped their respective groups; Elias Sjogren and the host nation’s Omar Ehab each ended the day unbeaten.

Play concludes in Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday 28th October.
