Staged in Kingston, Jamaica, play in the group qualification stage of the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events commenced matters on Sunday 23rd September at the 2018 Caribbean Senior Championships; the 60th edition of the well-established tournament.

Two groups in the initial stage of each competition; the goal was to gain a top two finish and thus progress to the semi-finals.

In the Men’s Team event, Guyana represented by Shemar Britton, Christopher Franklin and Joel Alleyne alongside the Dominican Republic’s Emil Santos, Samuel Galvez and Isaac Vila secured first place.

Respective second positions were reserved by Trinidad and Tobago alongside Barbados. Yuvraaj Dookram, Arun Roopnarine and Curtis Humphreys flew the flag for Trinidad and Tobago; for Barbados the selection read Kevin Farley, Tyrese Knight and Mark Dowell.

First place for Guyana but they were tested by Trinidad and Tobago; a three matches to two win being the end result. Mainstay of Guyana’s victory was Christopher Franklin; he beat Yuvraaj Dookram (2-11, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6), before in the vital fifth and deciding match of the fixture recovering from a two games to nil deficit to overcome Curtis Humphreys (5-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5).

Similarly, in the Women’s Team event, represented by Yasiris Ortiz, Eva Brito and Esmerlyn Castro it was first place for the Dominican Republic, as it was for Trinidad and Tobago’s Brittany Joseph, Catherine Spicer and Aleena Edwards.

Second positions finished in the hands of Guyana and Puerto Rico. Guyana fielded Chelsea Edghill, Trenace Lowe and Natalie Cummings; for Puerto Rico Daymar Castro, Alanis Reyes and Alondra Rodriguez comprised the selection.

The most impressive performance of the day was that of Brittany Joseph; she beat Alanis Reyes (11-7, 11-7, 11-7) and Daymar Castro (11-9, 8-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6) as Trinidad and Tobago recorded a three-one win in opposition to Puerto Rico.

Play continues in both the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events on Monday 24th September; the tournament concludes on Saturday 29th September.
