Hard fought contests; first place in their respective groups was the end result for the leading names in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event at the 2018 Chinese Taipei Junior and Cadet Open on Friday 24th August.

However, for Singapore’s Zhou Jingyi, the no.2 seed and Hong Kong’s Phoebe Hui Wai, the no.4 seed, it was not gained without some moments of trepidation.

Zhou Jingyi experienced a five games defeat at the hands of Tiffany Ke from the United States (11-5, 8-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-6), after having in her opening contest beaten Japan’s Yura Shinohara in straight games (11-9, 11-8, 11-5). It was to prove a vital win, in the concluding match in the group Yura Shinohara totally turned the tables and accounted for Tiffany Ke without surrendering a single game (11-6, 11-8, 13-11).

Thus on games ratio, it was first place for Zhou Jingyi (5:3) with Yura Shinohara (3:3) in second spot. Players finishing in first and second positions in each group advanced to the main draw; hence for Tiffany Ke, who concluded the group in third position (3:5), it was the end of the road.

Similarly, Phoebe Hui Wai experienced defeat. She lost to Japan’s Mao Takamori (10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9); it was her only defeat, for Mao Takamori, her only win. Phoebe Hui Wai finished the group with two wins against her name, the same as Chinese Taipei’s Tsai Chi-Chen. Vitally, Phoebe Hui Wai had beaten Tsai Chi-Chien (11-4, 11-8, 11-6), so she secured first place.

Problems for Zhou Jingyi and Phoebe Hui Wai but not for Rachel Sung of the United States, the top seed, nor for Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Lam, the no.3 seed. They topped their groups without experiencing defeat. However the nation to shine was Korea Republic. Kim Nayeong, the no.5 seed and Byun Seoyoung, the no.7 seed topped their groups as predicted, a feat also achieved by Kim Seongjin, the no.10 seed and Jung Dabin, the no.12 seed.

Meanwhile, for Hong Kong’s Yenn Ho Ching, the no.6 seed and Chelsea Chan Shiu Lam, the no.8 seed, they had to settle for second places; the former behind Korea Republic’s Yu Hyejin, the latter next in line to Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Pu-Syuan.

Runners up spot and progress; alas for Lavanya Maruthapandian of the Unite States, the no.9 seed and Canada’s Isabelle Xiong, the no.11 seed, it was journey’s end, both finished in third places. Lavanya Maruthapandian concluded matters next in line to Chinese Taipei’s Tsai Yun-En and Korea Republic’s Jang Yunwon; Isabelle Xiong behind Chen Tsai-Ni also from Chinese Taipei and Korea Republic’s Kim Taemin.

The main draw in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event commences on Saturday 25th August.
