Cheng Pu-Syuan accounted for Singapore’s Zhou Jingyi, the no.3 seed (7-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-4), in a rather closer contest, Karen Lee Hoi Man overcame Anna Hursey of Wales, the no.4 seed (13-15, 11-5, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8), whilst Japan’s Kaho Akae accounted for Hong Kong’s Yenn Ho Ching, the no.9 seed (11-7, 11-7, 11-8).
Defeats for seeded players but the saving grace was that it was their one and only defeat; thus second place in the group and a passport to the main draw was the end result.
Surprise outcomes but where the Chinese trio comprising Chen Yi, Yang Yiyun and Li Yuqi was concerned; the winners the previous day of the Cadet Girls’ Team title, all three duly secured first places in their respective groups without being extended the full five games distance.
Similarly, in the remaining groups, it was first place for the highest rated names; Japan’s Haruna Ojio alongside the host association’s Ng Wing Lam and Phoebe Hui Wai all ended the day unbeaten and with main draw positions booked.
Notably for Hong Kong, second positions and thus main draw places were booked by Luk Sze Yu, Li Cheuk Tung, Poon Yat, Chelsea Chan Shiu Lam and Ma Yat Sum.
Play in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event will proceed to the semi-final stage on Saturday 4th August.
