Staged on the occasion of the Liebherr 2018 World Team Championships in Halmstad, a major step forward for the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) was made on Monday 30th April at their Annual General Meeting; a new constitution that will promote good governance and transparency was adopted by over 30 delegates present at the gathering.

Present for the all-important step was Thomas Weikert, ITTF President, Steve Dainton ITTF Chief Executive Officer, Michael Brown, ITTF Chief Financial Officer in addition to Khaled El-Salhy, ATTF President and members of the ATTF Executive Council.

After several hours of deliberations, the Chair of Constitution Review Committee, Olabanji Oladapo urged delegates to vote and they all voted without exception for the adoption of the new Constitution.

Thomas Weikert pledged for ITTF support for the ATTF urging them to focus on the future of the sport.

“We need to work together for table tennis in the future and I hope we can move the sport forward.” Thomas Weikert

Similarly Steve Dainton explained that the ITTF would continue to support the continent while describing the adoption as historic and forward looking.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Dr Alaa Meshref, ITTF Executive President, stressed the adoption of the new constitution was vital to ITTF in its drive to promote good governance and transparency in the sport.

“ITTF is extremely happy with this development and it is indeed a step forward for table tennis in Africa.” Dr Alaa Meshref

Matters were aptly summed up by Khaled El-Salhy; he commended all who worked tirelessly to improve the lot of table tennis in Africa.
