Runner up the previous week in Belgium when beaten by Chinese Taipei’s Li Yu-Jhun at the final hurdle, Korea’s Lee Zion was the player to attract the attention a play progressed in the second round of the Under 21 Women’s Singles event at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF World Tour Platinum German Open in Magdeburg on the evening of Tuesday 7th November.

The no.7 seed, she beat Wang Yidi, the no.11 seed, the runner up in the Girls’ Singles event at the 2015 World Junior Championships in La Roche sur Yon; a player on whom China undoubtedly has hopes for the future. Lion Zion emerged successful in five games (7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6).

Success according to status but there was one outcome, somewhat tempered by the fact that the players are from the name national association, both from Japan, that was a surprise.

Miyu Nagasaki, only 15 years old and the no.13 seed, recovered from a two games to nil deficit to beat Mizuki Morizono, the no.5 seed and winner earlier this year in Bulgaria (9-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6).

A quarter-final place against expectations for Miyu Nagasaki; it was the same for Germany’s Chantal Mantz and China’s Sun Mingyang.

The no.17 seed, Chantal Mantz, who in the opening round had overcome Singapore’s Lin Ye, the no.8 seed (11-5, 12-10, 2-11, 4-11, 11-3), maintained her good form to beat Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia-Hsuan, the no.18 seed (7-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-6).

Similarly, Sun Mingyang, the no.27 seed and first round winner in opposition to Japan’s Miyuu Kihara, the no.12 seed (12-10, 11-8, 11-8) ended the progress of Korea’s Ryu Hanna, the no.30 seed (11-1, 11-5, 11-6) very much a player in form. In the opening round she had accounted for Kyoka Kato, the no.2 seed and like Miyuu Kihara from Japan (11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9).

Success for Chantal Mantz and Sun Mingyang as expected in their second round duels; it was the same for Hong Kong’s Minnie Soo Wai Yam, the top seed, as it was for Japan’s Miyu Maeda and Minami Ando, the respective third and fourth seeds. Likewise, China’s Chen Ke, the no.5 seed, negotiated the round successfully.

Minnie Soo Wai Yam beat Germany’s Nina Mittelham, the no.15 seed (11-5, 6-11, 11-8, 13-11), Miyu Maeda overcame China’s Zhang Rui, the no.10 seed (3-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-1, 11-6); Minami Ando ended the hopes of Romania’s Andreea Dragoman, the no.9 seed (9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9).

Defeat for Andreea Dragoman, it was the same for colleague, Adina Diaconu; the no.9 seed, she was beaten by Chen Ke (11-6, 11-3, 11-7).

At the quarter-final stage Minniue Soo Wai Yam faces Chantal Mantz, Chen Ke opposes Minami Ando; in the opposite half of the draw it is Miyu Maeda versus Lee Zion, Miyu Nagasdaki in opposition to Sun Mingyang.

The quarter-fina matches are scheduled for Wednesday 9th November.
