Troubled by a neck injury in recent years; earlier this month Yang Zi announced his retirement from international play.

However, at recent Singapore National Grand Finals, staged from Friday 6th to Sunday 15th January at the Lee Kong Chian Toa Payoh Training Centre; any discomfort was set aside, as the 23rd year old displayed the skills that saw him crowned the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion in New Delhi.

He won the Men’s Singles title beating 22 year old Clarence Chew in the final to add his name to the long and distinguished roll of honour.

The tournament is considered the most prestigious of all in Singapore; being first held in 1930s.

Overall, seven events were held. In addition to the success gained by Yang Zi, Safra White won the Men’s Team title with Sunsports securing the top step of the podium in the Women’s Team competition.

Meanwhile, Zhou Yihan, who competed in the recent Chinese Super League, won the Women’s Singles event beating Lin Ye in the final.

Defeat for Clarence Chew in the Men’s Singles final, in the Men’s Doubles competition it was gold; he partnered Ethan Poh Shao Feng to victory, the partnership defeating Bernard Tan and Pang Xue Jie at the final hurdle.

Top spot for Clarence Chew, it was top spot in a tournament where medals were shared; Eunice Lim and Wong Xinru secured the Women’s Doubles title, the Mixed Doubles went the way of Koen Pang Ywe En and Wong Xinru.

In the title deciding contest Eunice Lim and Wong Xinru beat Tan En Hui and Zhang Wanling; Koen Pang Ywe En and Wong Xinru ended the hopes of Lucas Tan and Yee Herng Hwee.

Awards were presented by Ellen Lee Geck Hoon PBM, the President of the Singapore Table Tennis Association.
