Represented by Kakeru Sone and Jo Yokotani, players with no current World ranking, Japan emerged as the outfit to cause the surprises as play commenced in the Cadet Boys’ Team event at the 2016 Hungarian Junior and Cadet Open in Szombathely on Friday 4th November.

Against the odds the duo finished in first place in their initial stage group, before continuing their good form to record an opening round success.

They finished their group in first place ahead of Portugal’s Ricardo Correia and Tiago Li, the no.12 seeds and the combination formed by England’s Ethan Walsh and Ilia Kortchinski of Belarus, the no.8 seeds. Impressively they beat both outfits by three matches to nil.

Two unexpected wins; in the opening round they added a third; they recorded a three-one success against the German pairing of Kay Stumper and Carlos Dettling, the no.10 seeds.

Success for Japan, in the one further first round fixture that was required, it was a different scenario, matters advanced as status advised. Hungary ‘B’ with Oliver Both and Norbert Trek on duty overcame the Czech Republic pairing of Filip Vybiral and Tomas Martinko by three matches to nil.

Japan upsetting the odds, in the counterpart Cadet Girls’ Team event, it was the Serbian duo of Radmils Tominjak and Reka Bezeg who emerged as surprise group winners. The no.16 seeds, they beat the Hungary ‘A’ Team pairing of Helga Dari and Anita Drabant, the no.4 seeds, to top their group and reserve a main draw place.

Upsets but not where the very top names were concerned. In the Cadet Boys’ Team event, Hungary ‘A’ with Csaba Andras and Patrik Juhasz on duty, the no.1 seeds, topped their group and thus booked a quarter-final place, as did the French partnership of Dorian Zeng and Jules Cavaille, the no.2 seeds.

Likewise, it was pole position and a quarter-final place for the combination of Ireland’s Owen Cathcart and Iran’s Amin Ahmadian, the no.3 seeds, as it was for the next in line, Russia’s Maksim Grebnev and Vladislav Makarov.

Meanwhile, in the Cadet Girls’ Team event, first position in the group and a place in the quarter-finals was clinched  by the top three outfits as predicted.

It was top spot for the Chinese Taipei trio of Huang Yu-Jie, Chang Ju-Chia and Chien Tung-Chuan, as it was for Russia’s Ekaterina Zironova and Elizabet Abraamian. Similarly, the formation of Germany’s Jana Kirner and Hong Kong’s Wong Chin Yau progressed unhindered.

Play in the Cadet Boys’ Team and Cadet Girls’ Team events conclude on Saturday 5th November.
