Lagos has transformed into Africa's table tennis capital, with more than 150 young talents from 17 countries gathering for the ITTF African Youth Championships 2025 - the culmination of three consecutive weeks of elite competition in Nigeria's mega-city.

The Youth Championships at Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall represent far more than tournament action. They showcase a continent where table tennis development has reached unprecedented levels, with a generation of players that ITTF Africa President Wahid Oshodi believes surpasses anything Africa has produced before.

“This generation is arguably the most gifted we’ve seen, and they represent the future of African table tennis,” Oshodi declared. “Players like Quadri Aruna and Omar Assar have made us proud globally, and now we get to see their potential successors.”

The depth of competition tells the story of Africa’s table tennis transformation. Tunisia’s Wassim Essid arrives as the continent’s top-ranked U-19 player, eager to defend his title against fierce competition from traditional powerhouses Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria, alongside emerging forces like Uganda.

Nigerian prospects Tobi Adebakin and Favour Ojo acknowledge the challenge ahead, but their presence in a home championship reflects the broader continental growth that has seen investment in youth development programmes reach every corner of Africa.

The presence of Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh – now coaching his national team after his own international career – demonstrates how African table tennis has created sustainable pathways from player to mentor, ensuring knowledge and expertise remain within the continental system.

“I’m thrilled to be in Nigeria for the first time and eager to compete against Africa’s best,” said Essid. “The energy and passion of Lagos fans make this a fantastic place to play.”

Lagos’s selection as host reflects Nigeria’s rapid emergence as a premier destination for international table tennis. Having successfully delivered the ITTF West Regional Championships, ITTF Africa Hopes Week and WTT Contender Lagos, the country has established itself as a reliable organiser capable of meeting international standards.

“Nigeria has proven to be a capable and passionate host,” noted ITTF Africa Deputy President Alfred Bagueka. “The support from Lagos fans and the high standard of organisation will undoubtedly make this a memorable event.”

The timing of the championships proves particularly significant as Africa prepares for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Team event winners earn direct qualification to the ITTF World Youth Championships in Romania, whilst singles finalists also secure automatic spots.

For many athletes, Lagos represents a crucial step toward Dakar 2026, where African nations will seek to maximise their impact at a home continent Youth Olympic Games. The international exposure and competitive experience gained in Lagos could prove invaluable for players targeting Olympic qualification. The championships align perfectly with broader continental development initiatives that have seen coaching education programmes, facility improvements, and grassroots participation drive unprecedented growth across Africa.

The convergence of talent in Lagos reflects years of strategic investment in African table tennis development, and now the continent has created an ecosystem where young talent can flourish.

The 16 events spanning U-15 and U-19 categories across singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team competitions provide comprehensive opportunities for players to demonstrate their abilities and earn international recognition.

As Lagos enters its third consecutive week as Africa’s table tennis epicentre, the youth championships represent a continent where table tennis development has reached maturity, producing players capable of competing with the world’s best.

The action continues throughout the week, with live coverage available on the ITTF Africa YouTube channel, as Africa’s rising stars write the next chapter in the continent’s remarkable table tennis journey.
