The local man emerges the star man

Impressively, on the second day of action at the Copa Costa Rica 2022 in San José, the host nation’s Steven Roman secured the men’s singles class 8 title for the third consecutive time.

On Friday 16th December, the concluding day of action, he made it made it three in a row yet again.

Competing in class 14, partnering colleague and tournament director, Domingo Arguello, he added the men’s doubles top prize, prior to partnering Aneth Araya, also from Costa Rica, to mixed doubles gold.

A group organised event, Domingo Arguello and Steven Roman finished ahead of the combination formed by Peru’s Daniel Prado and the host nation’s Hernan Sous.

Later in the mixed doubles, at the final hurdle, Steven Roman and Aneth Araya accounted for the partnership comprising Logan Wade of the United States and Romania’s Camelia Ciripan (11-8, 11-9, 11-9).

Gold for Aneth Araya, it was a second gold of the day; earlier in women’s doubles class 14 she had partnered Chile’s Joseline Yevenes to success. In a group competition they finished ahead of Romania’s Camelia Ciripan and Gabriela Constantin.

Two titles for Aneth Araya, it was the same for Colombia’s Manuela Guapi, as it was for Yorick Adjal of France as well as for the Czech Republic’s Zbynek Lambert and Ivan Karabec.

Having secured the women’s singles class 3-4 title, Manuel Guapi partnered compatriot, Luis Valencia to mixed doubles class 4 gold. In a group administered event, they finished ahead of the United States partnership comprising Zachary Wentz and Valerie Rolph.

Meanwhile, winner of men’s singles class 2-3, Yorick Adjal joined forces with Great Britain’s Simon Heaps to claim success in men’s doubles class 8; at the final hurdle the combination overcoming Zachary Pickett and Zachary Wentz of the United States (11-5, 14-12, 11-7).

Similarly, maintaining form, Zbynek Lambert, men’s singles class 6-7 winner, and Ivan Karabec, successful in men’s singles class 10, combined to claim the men’s doubles class 18 title. At the final hurdle they accounted the United States pairing of Muhammad Pirzada and Logan Watson (10-12, 12-10, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5).

A busy time, the Copa Costa Rica brings the Para table tennis calendar for 2022 to a close.
