Third place in the initial stage group was the end result for Alisa Fayaz Bhojani in the cadet girls’ singles event at the 2019 African Youth, Junior and Cadet Championships; it meant there was no place in the main draw.

Nevertheless, as play came to a conclusion in Accra on Saturday 13th April, she could be more than satisfied with her efforts in what was a landmark occasion.

The 13 year old is the first player from Tanzania ever to compete in the prestigious annual tournament. It was for her country a landmark, for her a learning experience.

“It was a good feeling for me being the first athlete to represent Tanzania in any African Junior and Cadet Tournament. I came here to gain experience and I have learned a lot. In Tanzania not many people play table tennis. I am excited that I made history here in Ghana.” Alisa Bhojani

A grade eight pupil at the International School of Tanganyika, she was clearly delighted with the opportunity that had been afforded.

“I played sports like football, basketball, badminton and swimming but I decided to focus more on table tennis because it gave me a better opportunity to represent Tanzania; not many people play the game in my country unlike in other sports. My interest in table tennis was ignited when I went to play badminton and I saw some people playing table tennis. I decided to try it out and I just fell in love with it.” Alisa Bhojani

Coached by Tsa Mtalaso; Alisa Bhojani recently competed in the ITTF East Africa Hopes Training Camp, another occasion to add to her bank of knowledge. Undoubtedly, she is determined to improve and in particular respects the way Egypt’s Hana Gida plays; however, she is most realistic and has her feet firmly planted on the floor.

“I don’t think I will want to take table tennis professionally. I will seize every opportunity the sport gives me to represent Tanzania in major competitions. I will continue to train hard in order to raise my game. My priority is to pursue my dream of becoming a medical doctor” Alisa Bhojani
