Play on the opening day of action, Tuesday 2nd April, completed in Guatemala City at the 2019 Central American Championships; somewhat different to the norm, the first title was decided.

Mexico’s Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva won the mixed doubles event.

Success and it was success as anticipated; the duo commenced play as the top seeds; the most severe test being in quarter-finals when they were stretched to the limit by the host nation’s Kevin Montufar and Lucia Cordero, the no.5 seeds (11-3, 11-7, 11-13, 7-11, 11-9).

A place in the penultimate round booked, life was less dramatic. Facing colleagues Miguel Lara and Monica Muñoz, the no.6 seeds and winners one round earlier in opposition to Guatemala’s Allan Gutierrez and Andrea Montufar, the no.3 seeds (11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-5), a straight games win was recorded (11-5, 11-5, 11-4). Success in some style, it was the same in the final as once again, Guatemalan opposition was put to the sword; in control from start to finish, the Mexican duo accounted for Hector Gatica and Mabelyn Enriquez, the no.2 seeds (11-5, 12-10, 11-8).

The top step and third step of the podium for Mexico, it was almost the whole gambit. After overcoming Carlos Zamora and Marbella Aceves (11-8, 11-6, 11-8), the no.7 seeds, Hector Gatica and Mabelyn Enriquez faced a further Mexican pairing in the guise of Ricardo Villa and Clio Barcenas, the no.4 seeds, a contest in which they almost came to grief.

Eventually, they withstood a spirited recovery to emerge successful by the very narrowest of margins in the deciding fifth game (11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9).

Gold for Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva, in the respective men’s doubles and women’s doubles events, both are very much on course to repeat the feat.

Partnering Ricardo Villa and occupying the top seeded position in the draw, Marcos Madrid secured his men’s doubles semi-final place, the pair overcoming Nicaragua’s Luis Moreno and Genaro Roustan (11-3, 11-3, 11-9). Similarly, Yadira Silva reserved her women’s doubles penultimate round berth, in harness with Clio Barcenas, the no.2 seeds, they accounted for Guatemala’s Monica Mejia and Stefanie Orellana in their quarter-final encounter.

At the semi-final stage of the men’s doubles event, Marcos Madrid and Ricardo Villa meet Hector Gatica and Hector Moscoso, the no.3 seeds; Allan Gutierrez and Kevin Montufar, the no.2 seeds, oppose Miguel Lara and Carlos Zamora, the no.4 seeds.

Similarly, in the women’s doubles event, the top four pairs are all through to the penultimate round. Clio Barcenas and Yadira Silva confront Lucia Cordero and Guatemalan colleague, Hidalynn Zapata, the no.4 seeds; in the top half of the draw Mabelyn Enriquez and Andrea Montufar, the top seeds, play Marbella Aceves and Mexican colleague, Monica Muñoz, the no.3 seeds.

The semi-finals and finals of both the men’s doubles and women’s doubles events will be played on Wednesday 3rd April.
