The leading outfits in both the men’s team and women’s team events at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Caribbean tournament in Georgetown, Guyana, successfully negotiated the opening day of proceedings on Sunday 24th March.

Fixtures organized on the new Olympic Games format, in the men’s event, where there were two groups on view, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic remained unbeaten; just one group in the women’s competition, likewise it was success for the Dominican Republic as it was for the hosts.

Convincing performances were the order of the day; Puerto Rico, the top seeds, setting the example.

Represented by Brian Afanador, José Gabriel Perez and Ricardo Jimenez, a 3-0 win was recorded against the St Vincent and Grenadines trio comprising Romano Spencer, Damion Dublin and Kavir Gaymes, followed by the same margin of victory in opposition to Guyana’s Christopher Franklin, Nigel Bryan and Shemar Britton.

Similarly selecting Samuel Galvez, Emil Santos and Wu Jiaji, the Dominican Republic imposed their authority on proceedings. A 3-0 win was recorded against Jamaica’s Mark Phillips, Simon Tomlinson and Kane Watson prior to a similarly impressive margin of victory being secured in opposition to the Barbados combination of Tyrese Knight, Kevin Farley and Mark Dowell.

Meanwhile, in the women’s team event, the Dominican Republic trio comprising Eva Brito, Esmerlyn Castro and Yasiris Ortiz showed no charity; a situation that applied also to Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill, Natalie Cummings and Trenace Lowe. Imposing 3-0 wins were posted in each fixture.

Both overcame the St Kitts and Nevis team of Shaniqua Esdaille, Angelisa Freeman and Shania Harris. In addition the Dominican Republic beat Jamaica’s Dadrian Lewis, Sandra Riettie and Solesha Young; Guyana accounted for the Barbados outfit formed by Anthonette Riley, Kenady King and Janae Lewis.

Play in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Caribbean tournament concludes on Monday 25th March; the winners in each of the men’s team and women’s team events qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games.
