Hosted at the Jubilee Restaurant at Safra Toa Payoh the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) annual awards ceremony was held on Wednesday 27th February and it was a special night for Yu Mengyu, who was honoured with the Player of the Year award for 2018!

Yu Mengyu enjoyed a fantastic year on the international stage taking home a silver medal from the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a bronze from the 2018 Asian Games, coming as a welcome surprise in among her ever continuing injury struggles which you can read about here.

Outgoing Singapore men’s coach Liu Jiayi was honoured for his services to the national team and the man set to succeed him in the role next month, Gao Ning also received recognition following a fine playing career.

Picking up the Youth Player of the Year award was 16-year-old player Pang Yew En Koen while Izaac Quek Yong, 12, was named Hopes Player of the Year.

President of the STTA, Ellen Lee hailed the award winners for acting as inspirations for future generations of Singaporean athletes:

“Beyond the medal achievements, I am glad that Team Singapore paddlers have also inspired us with their Singapore spirit. Our award recipients serve as inspirations and role models to other young aspiring athletes and they are a source of national pride for all Singaporeans.” Ellen Lee
