Tournaments

Less than an hour but the visit on Thursday 14th February to Ghana’s seat of power in Jubilee House, located in the country’s capital city of Accra, proved most worthwhile.

Alongside several dignitaries, Khaled El-Salhy, President of the African Table Tennis Federation and Mawuko Afadzinu, President of the Ghana Table Tennis Association visited Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the country’s Vice President. He gave his full support for the ITTF World Junior Circuit tournament to be staged from Monday 1st to Friday 5th April and for the immediately ensuing African Youth, Junior and Cadet Championships from Sunday 7th to Saturday 13th April.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia thanked the International Table Tennis Federation and the African Table Tennis Federation for agreeing to stage the tournaments in Ghana, the decision being most pertinent as the country will host the 2023 African Games.

“I want to welcome the ATTF team to Ghana particularly to the seat of power known as Jubilee House. In Ghana, we want to promote all sports because everybody seems to be focusing on football. Table tennis is one of the major sports in Ghana, as a kid I played table tennis in school. Now I hardly have the chance to play the game. I see it as good exercise and full of fun. For the tournaments being held in Ghana, I want you to count on my full support to help promote the sport; we are going to support the staging of the competition.” Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Additionally, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was also full of support for World Table Tennis Day on Saturday 6th April, the day between the two events.

“I am very happy to meet the number two citizen of this great nation, Ghana. I think the hosting of the two tournaments by Ghana will surely help to project the image of the country as well as Africa. This will also show that Africa is capable of hosting some of the big events in the world. We are hopeful of good organization having met with the Minister of Youth and Sports and his deputy and now the Vice President. It goes to show the commitment of Ghana in staging the tournament. We are excited meeting you and hope you will be ready to take to the table on April 6 to celebrate the World Table Tennis Day with us, a day to the kick-off of African Youth, Junior and Cadet Championships.” Khaled El-Salhy

Significantly, Mawuko Afadzinu thanked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his enormous support while hoping that staging the tournament would help to re-awaken table tennis passion among Ghanaians.

Among those present at the meeting, alongside myself was Wahid Enitan Oshodi, Vice President, Western Africa Region and Edward Appiah, the Director of Liaison and Protocol for Officer of the Vice President in Ghana. Likewise notable members of the Ghana Table Tennis Association attended: Kenneth Ashigbey, the Vice President, William Asare, the Treasurer and Nathaniel Kwesi Somuah, Media Officer.
