A step ahead of the field, the host nation dominated the junior boys’ team and junior girls’ team events at the 2019 Central American Junior and Cadet Championships in Cancun, Mexico on Thursday 7th February.

Both titles were secured in commanding fashion, not a single individual match being conceded as the medals were decided.

Selecting Dario Arce, Mauricio Cayetano and Diego Vazquez, a 3-0 nil win in opposition to Costa Rica’s Daniel Araya, Ricardo Azofeifa and José Perez secured the junior boys’ singles title.

Diego Vazquez gave Mexico the perfect start by beating Daniel Araya (11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8), before Dario Arce accounted for Ricardo Azofeifa (11-4, 11-8, 11-8) and Mauricio Cayetano sealed the victory by overcoming José Perez (11-6, 11-3, 11-3).

Impressive, earlier with Sebastian Cano preferred to Mauricio Cayetano, it had been the same margin of victory in opposition to Guatemala’s Sergio Carrillo, Jorge Chacon and Kevin Ruano; rather differently for Costa Rica it had been a more exacting experience.

The same three players as in the final on duty, they needed the full five matches to overcome the Panama trio comprising Gabriel Lewis, Jacobo Vahnish and Emilio Wong. The player to cause the Costa Ricans problems being Jacobo Vahnish; he beat both Ricardo Azofeifa (11-3, 11-2, 11-4) and Daniel Araya (11-9, 11-9, 11-4).

Similarly, on the second day of play there was no stopping the trio comprising Marbella Aceves, Clio Barcenas and Monica Muñoz in the junior girls’ team event.

A semi-final 3-0 win posted against Costa Rica’s Sharon Diaz, Paola Maroto and Ariana Ulloa secured a place in the final where the good form continued; by the same margin the title was clinched at the hands of El Salvador. In a hard fought opening game Marbella Aceves beat Monica Mendoza (7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6), before rather more comfortably Clio Barcenas accounted for Keren Constanza (11-6, 11-9, 11-8) and Monica Muñoz overcame Cristina Machado (11-5, 11-8, 11-6) to reserve the top step of the podium.

Earlier in the penultimate round El Salvador, fielding the same three players as in the final, had recorded a 3-1 win in opposition to Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, Mercedes Mendizabal and Hidalynn Zapata.

Backbone of the victory had been Monica Mendoza, she beat both Hidalynn Zapata (9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8) and Lucia Cordero (9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5).
