Flying the flag for France, Irvin Bertrand and Leo de Nodrest emerged the pair to cause the biggest upset in the second round of the Boys’ Doubles event at the 2018 World Junior Championships in Bendigo, Australia on the afternoon of Saturday 8th December.

Furthermore, alongside Russia’s Maksim Grebnev and Lev Katsman, they kept European medal hopes alive; both pairs upset the order of merit.

Most impressively, Irvin Bertrand and Leo de Nodrest, the no.9 seeds, inflicted the first defeat experienced by any male Chinese player in the whole tournament; they accounted for Xu Yingbin and Yu Heyi, the no.5 seeds (12-10, 14-12, 11-6).

Success contrary to predictions, it was the same for Maksim Grebnev and Lev Katsman but in a rather closer contest; the no.14 seeds, they accounted for the no.7 seeds, the United States combination of Sharon Alguetti and Kanak Jha in a full distance five games contest (6-11, 14-12, 13-11, 5-11, 11-7).

Otherwise, as the second round of the Boys’ Doubles event advanced, it was success for the higher rated pair.

China’s Xu Peng and Xu Haidong, the top seeds, beat Singapore’s Josh Chan Shao Han and Pang Yew En Koen, the no.11 seeds (9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7), Romania’s Cristian Pletea and Rares Sipos, the no.2 seeds, accounted for Italy’s Matteo Mutti and Carlo Rossi, the no.13 seeds (11-3, 11-9, 11-5).

Similarly, Japan’s Shunsuke Togami and Yukiya Uda, the no.3 seeds, overcame Iran’s Amirreza Abbasi and Amin Ahmadian, the no.10 seeds (6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-1); colleagues Kakeru Sone and Yuta Tanaka, the no.8 seeds, ended the hopes of Frenchmen Lilian Bardet and Bastien Rembert, the no.12 seeds (11-7, 11-9, 11-8).

Meanwhile, in the remaining second round Boys’ Doubles contests, India’s Manush Utpalbhai Shah and Manav Vikash Thakkar, the no.6 seeds, overcame Poland’s Artur Grela and Samuel Kulczycki, the no.16 seeds (11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 11-3); Chinese Taipei’s Feng Yi-Hsin and Li Hsin-Yang, the no.4 seeds, halted the progress of Portugal’s Vitor Amorin and Tiago Li, the no.26 seeds (11-7, 11-9, 11-9).

At the quarter-final stage Xiang Peng and Xu Haidong meet Kakeru Sone and Yuta Tanaka, Manush Utpalbhai Shah and Manav Vikash Thakkar confront Feng Yi-Hsin and Li Hsin-Yang. In the opposite half of the draw it is Shunsuke Togami and Yukiya Uda against Irvin Bertrand and Leo de Nodrest, Maksim Grebnev and Lev Katsman versus Cristian Pletea and Rares Sipos.

The matches will be staged later in the day.
