Familiar faces on this year’s ITTF World Junior Circuit, Leo de Nodrest and Lucie Gauthier of France have time and again impressed, always most worthy competitors.

On Wednesday 5th December at the 2018 World Junior Championships in Bendigo, Australia; they impressed again. Competing in the lower half of the draw, they emerged the pair to cause the biggest upset as play progressed in the Mixed Doubles event.

The no.20 seeds, after overcoming the Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yung-Chih and Tsai Yu-Chin (11-6, 11-5, 4-11, 11-8), listed at no.50 in the order of merit, they ousted the no.2 seeds, the Indian partnership formed by Manav Vikash Thakkar and Archana Girish Kamath, a contest in which after the opening two games appeared to be slipping from their hands.

Eventually, they succeeded by the minimal two point margin in the deciding fifth game (3-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8).

A quite outstanding effort and as proceedings advanced in the lower half of the Mixed Doubles draw, the win overshadowed the performance of Hong Kong’s Pau Yik Man and Lee Ka Yee, who likewise upset the seeding to book a third round place. The no.31 seeds, after ousting Finland’s Alex Naumi and Annika Lundström, named at no.56 in the pecking order, ended the progress of Brazil’s Guilherme Teodoro and Bruna Takahashi, the no.9 seeds (11-5, 11-8, 11-9).

Unexpected outcomes in the lower half of the draw; otherwise it was progress as anticipated.

Japan’s Yuta Tanaka and Miyu Nagasaki, the no.3 seeds, accounted for India’s Snehit Suravajjula and Prapti Sen (11-2, 11-8, 11-5), followed by success in opposition to Italy’s Carlo Rossi and Jamila Laurenti, the no.28 seeds (11-7, 11-1, 11-6).

Likewise, China’s Xu Yingbin and Shi Xunyao, the no.5 seeds, progressed in some style. They ended the aspirations of Girls’ Team semi-finalists, Korea Republic’s Shin Yubin and Wee Yeji. The first to suffer was Wee Yeji in partnership with Belgium’s Olav Kosolosky (11-8, 11-3, 11-9), next was Shin Yubin who partnered Argentina’s Alexis Orencel (13-11, 11-6, 11-7). Notably in the opening round Alexis Orencel and Shin Yubin had beaten the combination formed by Austria’s Maciej Kolodziejczyk and Nadezhda Bogdanova of Belarus, the no.27 seeds (11-13, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9).

Progress for Xu Yingbin and Shi Xunyao, it was the same for Chinese Taipei’s Feng Yi-Hsin and Su Pei-Ling, the no.7 seeds. They beat the pairing comprising Germany’s Daniel Rinderer and Amy Wang of the United States (11-5, 11-7, 11-4), before overcoming the French duo of Bastien Rembert and Prithika Pavade, the no.25 seeds (8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9).

The third round and quarter-finals of the Mixed Doubles event will be staged on Saturday 8th December.
