Runner up in the very first tournament of the year in Hungary when beaten by colleague Wang Manyu, China’s He Zhuojia was very much the player in form as proceedings commenced in the concluding gathering of the year.

Required to qualify, in the opening round of the Women’s Singles event at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum Liebherr Austrian Open on Thursday 8th November, she caused the biggest upset of the day to date; she accounted for Japan’s Kasumi Ishikawa, the no.4 seed (11-5, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4).

Furthermore, the win greatly enhances the possibility that she may gain a place in next month’s Grand Finals. She now occupies 16th position (329 points) replacing Korea Republic’s Jeon Jihee (308 points) who departed proceedings in Linz in the qualification tournaments; her hopes of a Women’s Singles invitation are now over.

Success contrary to expectations for He Zhuoija, as matters commenced in the Women’s Singles event, it was the same for Romania’s Benadette Szocs; likewise, she caused Japan pain, in a full distance duel determined by the very narrowest of margins, she accounted for Hitomi Sato, the no.14 seed (12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10).

Otherwise as play commenced it was success for the leading names; notably like He Zhoujia from China, there were wins for Zhu Yuling, Liu Shiwen, Chen Meng and Chen Xingtong. Zhu Yuling, the top seed, beat Romania’s Elizabeta Samara (12-10, 12-10, 11-13, 11-3, 11-9), Liu Shiwen, the no.3 seed, overcame Portugal’s Fu Yu (11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-1).

Similarly, Chen Meng accounted for DPR Korea’s Kim Song I (11-3, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4); Chen Xingtong ended the hopes of colleague Wu Yang, who unfortunately retired injured after the end of the third game (11-1, 11-8, 11-8, 11-1).

Meanwhile, Doo Hoi Kem beat Canada’s Zhang Mo (11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 13-11); Mima Ito accounted for Japanese colleague, Miyu Nagasaki (11-7, 1-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7) as the play in the early first round Women’s Singles matches came to a conclusion

The Women’s Singles second round matches will be played on Friday 9th November.
