Performances to admire, names to note, young players from Asia dominated proceedings as the semi-finalists in the Boys’ Singles event at the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge in Tottori, Japan were decided on Tuesday 30th October.

Japan’s Kazuki Hamada, Sora Matsushima and Hiroto Shinozuke booked penultimate round places, as did China’s Zeng Beixun.

The player to offer the greatest resistance was Belgium’s Adrien Rossenfosse, after recording a six games win in opposition to Nikhil Kumar of the United States (11-4, 13-15, 11-9, 11-7, 11-13, 12-10), he extended Hiroto Shinozuke, the full seven games distance (11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-6). Earlier in the quarter-final round, Hiroto Shinozuka had ended the hopes of Iran’s Radin Khayyam (10-12, 11-4, 11-9, 5-11, 11-3, 11-9).

Hard fought success, it was the same for Hiroto Shinozuke’s colleagues but without the need for full distance dramas.

Kazuki Hamada accounted for Poland’s Maciej Kubik (14-12, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5) and then followed with success against Korea Republic’s Hwang Jinha (11-3, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8). Similarly Sora Matsushima overcame Romania’s Iulian Chirita (11-7, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10) prior the reserving his place in the semi-finals by beating Chinese Taipei’s Wang Guan-Ru (11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9).

Worthy performances from the Japanese trio, it was the same from Zeng Beixun. On the penultimate day of action, he beat Singapire’s Izaac Quek Yong (11-4, 8-11, 11-1, 11-5, 11-4), prior to recording a quarter-final success in opposition to the host nation’s Yuma Tanigaki (9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 10-12, 11-5).

At the quarter-final stage Zeng Beixun meets Kazuki Hamada, Horoto Shinozuka faces Sora Matsushima.

A clean sweep of medals for Asia in the Boys’ Singles competition; not in the Boys’ Doubles event where Europe has made its presence felt.

Poland’s Maciej Kubik and Frenchman Myshaal Sabhi accounted for the Latin American pairing of Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo and Costa Rica’s Alfredo Sanchez (11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-3), to reserve their place in the semi-final; a result also achieved by Germany’s Mike Hollo and Adrien Rassenfosse. In the round of the last eight pairs they beat Huang Jinha and Zeng Beixun (12-10, 9-11, 11-4, 16-14).

Japanese pairs now await, Maciej Kubik and Myshaal Sabhi play Sora Matsushima and Yuma Tanagaki, Mike Hollo and Adrien Rassenfosse face Kazuki Hamada and Hioroto Shinoazuke. Sora Matsushima and Yuma Tanagaki reserved their semi-final place by beating the North American pairing of Canada’s Edison Huang and Sid Nareh of the United States, to book their semi-final place 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7); at the same stage Kazukin Hamada and Hiroto Shinozuka also caused North America heartaches. They ended the dreams of Nikhil Kumar of the United States who joined forces with Canada’s Edward Ly.

Meanwhile, in the Mixed Doubles event where partners are drawn by lot and matches are best of three games; at the semi-final stage Poland’s Maciej Kubik and the Korea Republic’s Byun Seoyoung meet the combination of Romania’s Iulia Chirita and Japan’s Yukari Sugasawa; in the opposite half of the draw Sora Matsushima and Brazil’s Giulia Takahashi oppose New Zealand’s Nathan Xu and Romania’s Elena Zaharia.

Play in Tottori concludes on Wednesday 31st October.
