Upsets plentiful but at the end of the day it was the name at the top of the list that prevailed when play closed on Sunday 28th October at the 2018 Egypt Open in Sharm El Sheikh.

Russia’s Ekaterina Zironova won the Junior Girls’ Singles event at thus secured her first ever such title on the ITTF World Junior Circuit.

At the final hurdle, she beat China’s Zhou Bingru (11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-9), having earlier in the day in the penultimate round accounted for the host nation’s Alaa Yehia (11-9, 11-9, 11-4, 7-11, 16-14); in the opposite half of the draw Zhou Bungru had overcome colleague Wang Yidan in a full distance seven games contest (11-13, 3-11, 11-9, 11-1, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7).

Defeat for Wang Yidan and Zhou Bingru but together there was success, they won the Junior Girls’ Doubles overcoming Ekaterina Ziranova and the Czech Republic’s Martina Novakova in the final (11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8).

So near to two titles on the concluding day of play; it was the same for Poland’s Ilona Sztwiertnia. She finished in runners spot in the Cadet Girls’ Doubles event in partnership with colleague Emilia Skuba, the pair experiencing defeat at the hands of Egypt’s Farida Badawy, who partnered Malamentina Papadimitriou of Greece (11-3, 11-5, 11-5).

Later in the day the tables were turned. At the semi-final stage of the Cadet Girls’ Singles competition, the no.5 seed, she beat Malamantina Papadimitriou, the top seed (11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9), before overcoming Russia’s Alina Zavarykina (11-8, 11-7, 12-10) to arrest the title. In the counterpart penultimate round contest Alina Zavarykina had ended Egytian hopes by overcoming Roa Amro (11-7, 3-11, 11-6, 11-8).

Success for visitors to Sharm El Sheikh, there was success for the hosts; in an all Egyptian final, Mariam Younes beat Jana Wagih to win Mini-Cadet Girls’ Singles gold.
