Winner just three days earlier in Men’s Singles Class 9 at the 2018 World Para Championships in the Slovenian town of Lasko-Celje, thus adding to the gold medal secured at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games; for the host nation’s Laurens Devos, on Tuesday 23rd October, at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Belgium Open in De Haan it was start all over again.

Moreover, just as when beating Russia’s Iuri Nozdrunov (11-8, 11-6, 11-9) to complete the fifth match of his itinerary in the Zlatorog Sports Hall and in so doing reserving the top step of the podium, so on home soil, the 18 year old continued his winning ways.

Required to compete in the qualification tournament, in the first preliminary round of the Men’s Singles event, he beat Poland’s Kamil Dziadek in a hard fought five games encounter (12-10, 11-9, 13-11, 8-11, 11-3).

“I had a busy week and came back from Slovenia on Sunday. I had to adapt to the venue and was not so happy about my level of play. Luckily I managed to win four-one.” Laurens Devos

Success for Laurens Devos, it was success in what proved a very productive opening preliminary round for the host nation. In addition, David Comeliau, Olav Kosolosky, Gaeten Swartenbrouckx and Valentin Pieraert all emerged victorious.

David Comeliau accounted Slovakia’s Adam Brat (11-8, 11-8, 11-3, 11-2); whilst in a similarly impressive manner, 16 year old Olav Kosolosky ended the hopes of Seth Petch from the United States (11-5, 11-6, 11-2, 11-9).

“I had a good feeling after my first match against the American. It’s nice to play an international tournament in Belgium. For the moment I focus more on the Junior Circuit but events like this are also good to gain experience. I don’t have a particular goal; I will try to play my best and hope to get far in both singles competitions.” Olav Kosolosky

Fine performances; it was the same from Gaeten Swartenbrouckx and Valentin Pieraert; notably both overcame Chinese opposition. Gaeten Swartenbrouckx beat China’s Xu Yao (12-10, 11-6, 11-9, 13-11), Valentin Pieraert ousted Jing Pengwei (11-8, 11-6, 11-9).

Play in the qualification tournament concludes on Wednesday 24th October.
