First places secured earlier in the day in their initial group stage contests, the Dominican Republic’s Isaac Vila and Guyana’s Christopher Franklin emerged the somewhat surprise semi-finalists in the Men’s Singles event at the 2018 Caribbean Senior Championships on Friday 28th September, in Kingston, Jamaica.

Isaac Vila had started proceedings as the no.5 seed, Christopher Franklin was the no.7 seed; neither caused major upsets but both somewhat exceeded expectations and kept their nerves when the pressure mounted.

Impressively, Christopher Franklin opened his account by overcoming Martinique’s Samuel Delepine (11-2, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6), before at the quarter-final stage, the round in which matters became best of seven games as opposed to in the early rounds and the group phase best of five, he overcame the Dominican Republic’s Abit Tejada by the very narrowest of margins (11-7, 11-5, 4-11, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9).

Notably, in the group stage of proceedings, Abit Tejada had beaten Marcus Smith of Barbados, the no.9 seed (11-4, 11-4, 11-3) to reserve first place in the group.

Likewise, there was a close call for Isaac Vila in the quarter-final round, after having accounted for Mark Dowell of Barbados in three straight games (11-9, 11-3, 11-4), he was extended to the limit by the latter’s colleague, Tyrese Knight, the no.3 seed (9-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10, 10-12, 12-10).

Close calls for Christopher Franklin and for Isaac Vila; for the Dominican Republic’s Emil Santos and Samuel Galvez, the respective top seeds, life was less demanding.

Emil Santos booked his place in the penultimate round, courtesy of success against Marcus Smith (11-8, 11-7, 11-4) and Guyana’s Shemar Britton (11-7, 11-6, 11-5, 7-11, 11-4); Samuel Galvez accounted for Jamaica’s Kane Watson (11-4, 11-2, 10-12, 11-8), prior to ousting Trinidad and Tobago’s Yuvraaj Dookram (11-7, 5-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-6).

At the semi-final stage, Emil Santos meets Isaac Vila; Samuel Galvez opposes Christopher Franklin. Play concludes on Saturday 29th September.
