Impressive once again from Emil Santos and Samuel Galvez, the players who earlier in the week had had been the backbone of the Dominican Republic’s success in the Men’s Team event and had joined forces to win the Men’s Doubles title; that good form continued on Friday 28th September at the 2018 Caribbean Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.

The respective top two seeds in the Men’s Singles event, they duly remained unbeaten to reserve first places in the group qualification stage and thus advanced to the main draw.

However, for five notable names; those who had started proceedings as the highest rated in their particular groups, there were problems.

Notably, Tyrese Knight from Barbados, the no.2 seed, was stretched to the very limit by Martinique’s Samuel Delepine (11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 13-11); a close defeat but it was the only defeat for Samuel Delepine. He duly finished in second place and thus advanced to the main draw.

Likewise, for Mark Dowell and Marcus Smith also from Barbados, as well as for Guyana’s Nigel Bryan and Jamaica’s Kane Watson, there were defeats. All favourites to secure first places, Mark Dowell was beaten by Puerto Rico’s Derek Torres (11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 11-3), Marcus Smith lost to the Dominican Republic’s Abit Tejada (11-4, 11-4, 11-3), whilst Kane Watson suffered at the hands Guyana’s Joel Alleyne (4-11; 11-6, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6).

However, for Mark Dowell, Marcus Smith and Kane Watson it was their only defeat; second position and progress to the main draw was thus secured. Rather differently for Nigel Bryan it was third place and farewell; he was beaten by both Trinidad and Tobago’s Curtis Humphreys (11-7, 11-9, 11-8) and by Kevin Farley of Barbados (6-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4). Kevin Farley duly accounted for Curtis Humphreys (11-7, 11-9, 11-8) to secure first place.

Matches in the main draw follows later in the day, play in Kingston concludes on Saturday 29th September.
