Top seeds and thus by definition favourites for gold, following the opening phase of proceedings, there was no place in the main draw of the Junior Girls’ Team event at the 2018 Croatia Junior and Cadet Open in Varazdin for the international combination formed for Egypt’s Marwa Alhodaby, England’s Denise Payet and Thailand’s Jinnipa Sawettabut.

First place in the group the only option for progress to the main draw; in the contest to determine that vital position they were beaten by Ukraine’s Anastasiya Dymytrenko, Veronika Hud and Yaroslava Prykhodko in a full distance five match contest.

Star of the show was Anastasiya Dymytrenko. In the second match of the fixture she beat Denise Payet (3-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-9) to level matters, after in the opening contest of the engagement, Yaroslava Prykhodko had experienced defeat at the hands of Jinnipa Sawettabut (11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7).

Matters level, the top seeds went ahead when Marwa Alhodaby beat Veronika Hud (11-7, 11-6, 11-7), before Anastasiya Dymytrenko returned to the scene to level matters; by the very narrowest of decisions she accounted for Jinnipa Sawettabut (12-10, 3-11, 12-10, 10-12, 13-11). The momentum now in favour of Ukraine, Yaroslava Prykhodko overcame Denise Payet (11-7, 3-11, 11-8, 11-5) to conclude matters.

Defeat for the top seeds and no place in the main draw. It was the same for Croatia, the no.5 seeds and Slovenia, the no.7 seeds. On duty for Croatia, Andrea Pavlovic, Sara Susac and Marta Vukelic experienced a three-one defeat at the hands of Singapore’s Goi Rui Xuan, Pearlyn Koh Kai Xin and Wong Xin Ru; for Slovenia, it was not just one defeat, they suffered on two occasions.

Represented by Lea Paulin, Katarina Strazar and Aleksandra Vovk, a three-nil reverse was experienced at the hands of Germany’s Anastasia Bondareva, Laura Tiefenbrunner and Sophia Klee, after earlier in the day it had been the same outcome when confronting China’s Li Ruonan, Li Yake and Zuo Yue. The Chinese trio, having recorded a three-nil win in their opening encounter against Anastasia Bondareva, Laura Tiefenbrunner and Sophia Klee, duly topped the group.

First place for China, other than for the top seeds, amongst the leading outfits it was pole position. Chinese Taipei, the no.2 seeds, represented by Chen Ting-Ting, Fang Sih-Han and Cai Fong-En secured first place as did Russia’s Elizabet Abraamian, Kristina Kazantseva and Ekaterina Zironova, the no.3 seeds. Likewise, it was a day without defeat for Poland’s Aleksandra Michalek, Anna Wegrzyn and Katarzyna Wegrzyn, the no.4 seeds.

Play in the Junior Girls’ team event concludes on Saturday 15th September.
