An impressive performance from Kim Hayeong; in the opening round it had been equally imposing; she overcame the defensive skills extolled by Alina Nikitchanka of Belarus, the no.12 seed in four games (11-4, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6).

Success against the odds for Kim Hayeong; it was the same for Maki Shiomi, like Miyu Nagasaki from Japan, as it was for China Sun Mingyang and Russia’s Valeria Shcherbartykh.

Maki Shiomi, the no.10 seed, after accounting for Slovenia’s Ana Tofant, the no.23 seed (9-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-8), overcame colleague, Satsuki Odo, the no.6 seed (11-6, 11-5, 11-4) to reserve her last eight place.

Similarly, Sun Mingyang, the no.9 seed, after narrowly overcoming Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi, the no.18 seed (11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 12-14, 11-8), upset the order of merit by defeating Germany’s Wan Yuan, the no.7 seed (11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9).

Meanwhile, for Valeria Shcherbartykh, it was a somewhat different route. The no.17 seed, she overcame Belgium’s Lisa Lung, the no.15 seed, by the narrowest of decisions (11-8, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9), prior to ousting an adversary in form. She beat Japan’s Yuka Umemura, the no.24 seed (16-14, 11-2, 7-11, 11-4), the player who the previous round had caused a major upset by ending the hopes of Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia-Hsuan, the no.5 seed (11-6, 11-7, 13-11).

Otherwise for the leading names on duty it was progress the main draw. China Chen Ke, the top seed, alongside colleague Zhang Rui, the no.3 seed and Wang Yidi, the no.4 seed duly progressed, as did Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, the no.8 seed.

At the quarter-final stage Chen Ke meets Maki Shiomi, Adriana Diaz opposes Wang Yidi; in the opposite half of the draw Zhang Rui faces Sun Mingyang, Valeria Shcherbartykh confronts Kim Hayeong.

The Under 21 Women’s Singles event will be played to a conclusion on Wednesday 15th August.
