First place in the initial stage group phase was the end result for China in both the Cadet Boys’ Team and Cadet Girls’ Team events on Wednesday 1st August, the opening day of play, at the 2018 Hang Seng Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open.

Furthermore, it was emphatic success.

In the Cadet Boys’ Team event, the trio comprising Xiang Peng, Zeng Beixun and Zhu Jiaqi completed the day by recording three matches to nil wins in each engagement; margins of victory also achieved by their compatriots Chen Yi, Li Yuqi and Yang Yiyun in the counterpart Cadet Girls’ Team competition.

However, in both events, in the remaining groups there were surprise first places. In all instances the highest rated outfit in the group experienced defeat but only one defeat, finishing in second position and thus advancing to the main draw; the outfit to cause the upset remained unbeaten to top the group.

Hong Kong ‘A’ represented by Yiu Kwan To and Yu Nok finished ahead of the India ‘A’ team duo of Arush Dutt and Payas Jain; likewise in the Cadet Boys’ Team competition it was top spot for Japan ‘A’ represented by Sora Matsushima and Ryoichi Yoshiyama. The leading outfit in the group, the Singaporean duo of Nicholas Chong and Andy Wong Yan Kai had to settle for runners up spot.

Likewise, in the Cadet Boys’ Team event, Hong Kong ‘C’ with Lau Chun Nok and Man Kai Shan in action topped their group contrary to expectations ahead of the combination formed by Iran’s Navid Shams who joined forces with Hong Kong’s Liu Shing Hang and Lee Pok Kwan. In a similar vein, somewhat unexpectedly, it was pole position for Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yan-Cheng and Li Yan-Yun; the Hong Kong ‘B’ pairing of Baldwin Ho Wa Chan and Choy Chun Kit had to settle for second place.

Meanwhile, in the Cadet Girls’ Team event where there were three groups in the initial stage; Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Pu-Syuan and Tsai Pei-Rung secured first place as did the Hong Kong ‘B’ pairing of Chelsea Chan Shiu Lam and Yenn Ho Ching. Respective second positions finished in the hands of Hong Kong ‘A’ represented by Phoebe Hui Wai and Ng Wing Lam, alongside Singapore’s Janissa Cheng Yoke Ning, Yenn Ho Ching and Ma Yat Sum.

Play in both the Cadet Boys’ Team and Cadet Girls’ Team events concludes on Thursday 2nd August.
