It is another major tournament for Derek Abrefa who is a very level headed person and most realistic; progressing to the main draw is his goal.

“The Commonwealth Games was another big platform. I think with the level of players I met at the Games and what I learned from them, it will help my performance at the upcoming Nigeria Open. My confidence level is very high.” Derek Abrefa.

Well educated, a Cape Coast University undergraduate, Derek Abrefa realises the 2018 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open is an opportunity to measure his level and also learn.

“I have featured in three editions of the Nigeria Open and I love being a part of this tournament. It is a platform to expose African players who have no means to participate in international tournaments. The welcome by the Nigerian players and by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation is beyond imagination. All the people are full of love and always they want to make you feel at home.” Derek Abrefa

A tough challenge awaits but Derek Abrefa is prepared and welcomes the opportunity afforded.

“The tournament has been so exciting and at the same time tough. The experience playing world class players has been helpful. It is a kind of tournament where you have much to learn because of the calibre of players that you come across. I didn’t make my way to the knock-out stage of the previous editions. My target this year is to make it into the main draw and take it from there. For me the tournament is the biggest I have ever come across in the African continent. It is a tournament where you meet top class players who participate in World Championships.” Derek Abrefa

Whatever the outcome, Derek Abrefa is aware that he is entering a tournament that improves by the year.

“I rate the Nigeria Open above average because we are always given excellent treatment; the hospitality is so good. Also, the fun, excitement and the thrills make it so unique when compared to others.” Derek Abrefa

In Lagos Derek Abrefa will be required to compete in the qualification tournament. He will partner colleague Felix Lartey in the Men’s Doubles event.
